I have 3 dogs of my own right now and have had pets all my life. But anyone who is a pet owner should know that they have to have baths and grooming just like their owners. I have met some drivers who themselves stink and not because of being with a dog. I feel that if I want to travel with one of my dogs it should be my choice. But I will have the responsibility to keep it on a leash so it will not bother anyone else and to clean up after it when necessary. I don't think that a food warehouse would want my dog on their property and I respect their reason why. So I just leave my pups at home and be with them when I return.

I rode with two smokers... one was actually a very tidy smoker, used an ashtray (not the trucks ashtry), wiped down the whole front of the cab and windows every night and had this air purifier thing that pluged into the lighter. The other was a sloppy smoker, he would try to ash out the window, which doesn't really work, ashes would fly back into the truck, he also just flicked his cigarettes out the window and a few time they flew back in as well, so there were burns in the seats and on the floor. He never wiped the truck down in the month that I rode with him, and his truck was very trashy.
I am sure there are similar extemes in pet owners. I think a driver is either a clean driver or not, one who takes care of the truck or doesn't.
I don't believe it is fair to penalize a clean driver because of the dirty drivers.
I love pets, I enjoy getting a chance to pet and play with the dogs out there. I don't have a pet with me, so it is nice to get to get a break and interact with the dogs and pets out there...

At least the driver that tarps is doing his job and working, not just laying around on the floor.

Sadest thing I saw was an abandoned dog at the AZ port of entry on I-40 (NM border). He'd come up to every driver trying to get a handout but he wasn't getting much I don't think. This was in Oct 2009.

This has been transformed into a thread about pets and smokers.

To the original poster, I still would like to find out why you were actually fired. Seems to me It would have taken less effort and money on the part of any company to just say no pets, than to allow pets and then try to frustrate drivers into quitting or firing them. But stranger things have happened.

a quick little note and some advice... I got my unemployment from them after I appealed, the judge said it was not a just cause term... now they are appealing the judges decision. The advice I am wanting is this, if I won that appeal, would I have a wrongful termination suit against them????

I was termed for being late for delivery, however according to the company I was delivering to said I was not late... They said that they do not make appts its anytime between 7-11. Also in employee handbook it says you have to have 3 lates in a 90 day period, I only had 2.

I had a dog with me for 11 mo of employment with Celadon and the girl that inspected the trucks that I had to turn in, due to trade in, would always say there wasn't a dog in it. I did have a dog in it but I was extremely clean. If its snowing or raining ya have a towel ready by the door when you return from outside. Its a lot of work but well worth the companionship a dog offers out here. I've teamed several times and I prefer having a dog. Its my choice and I shouldn't be chastized for it. I do my part to keep her and the truck clean for the next driver.

As for Celadon...they suck the big green weenie , as my friend says. I didn't get fired from them but they did cut my miles down to about 400 a week so I would quit. They got their wish. I was there 11 mo too long. Glad I'm gone. :biggrin_25522:

Dogs, changes pay, I am beginning to think that common sense is missing in this discussion. If it's free it's not worth it. What is good to day isn't tomorrow. This is the real world and not a #### thing you can do about it, fight about, complain about, but if your not standing on the same side as the man or woman signing your check than I have to say good chance your not going to be happy.
