Yes, but you really want chains on all four drives.

I think it's just really poor highway maintenance.

All my years running the NW I only ever threw triples on the back axle. We only carried one set of singles for the trailer when they were required. I never had any issues at 105k gross.

There’s more going on there than just outside chaining. We have no idea if the trailer is sitting in a ditch, driver cut a corner and the trailer is sitting in a snow pile, or whatever. The fact the truck doesn’t move even a little bit tells me there’s more to this story.

Driving a Volvo tag, I only ever ran outside chains on the one drive axle and outside chains on the trailer. I never had an issue. Why? I drove sensibly, paid attention to conditions, and didn’t put myself on Donner, Happy Jack, Parleys, or any other summit in the worst conditions. Most people, in general, are just stupid. “I have AWD.”, “I have good tires.”, “It’s a Tesla.”, “They plow the roads.”, and whatever else to justify their stupidity. The last time I was chained up over Donner, the road was mostly blocked by stuck cars/SUV’s. Car drivers are the biggest problem, IMO. Most don’t even know how to turn off TC or how to install chains/cables. To go up there with only all-season tires is plain stupidity.

I never saw LEO’s ticketing for not having chains. There’s so much other, more important stuff going on in those conditions than worrying about who has chains.

Doesn’t change the fact that their inside tires are spinning in the snowpack rendering the outside chains useless. A set of triples and they could’ve dug and got going.

A lot of times Lost Trail would be clear and no snow at the chain area and we’d run up the hill barefoot, sometimes we’d spin out, and I never had any issues getting going on a 7% grade at 105k with triples. We dig our way to the top, pull the chains off, and drop down the other side.

I have only broken the Mississippi River barrier a few times. I don’t think I’m allowed over there permanently. Was never given a reason :biggrin_2559:

Not here to argue, but if you dig down with the outside dual, your inside dual will be taking the weight. I’ve been in some gnarly places with one axle chained with triple railers.
