When you apply power to the 7700 PRO, it will automatically turn on. I suspect that you had it plugged into your cigarette socket. When you turned on the ignition, the 7700 PRO automatically came up.
I have never heard of one just randomly turning on by itself. I guess that you could also double-check that the unit is indeed off before leaving the truck. Especially if your your cigarette socket stays live with the ignition off.

For those of you who have been asking for a more complete manual, these operating hints will come in handy:
http://downloads.cobra.com/MobileNav/Nav7700/Nav7700hints.pdf
It is a PDF file with hypertext.

I know this was asked once but no follow up, can we backup the address to a laptop etc.? Would be nice, due to the fact that the unit lockup once and had to do a master reset before the unit would start thinking correctly.

OK, a utility is now available for saving a backup of the address book into your computer. It is NOT possible to edit the address book.
Not only will the address book be saved, but also all your user settings such as map settings, your truck setup, etc.
The utility is available here:

I really like my 7700 pro and it has worked great so far other than the occasional lockup if I try to view the turn by turn directions too soon after calculating a new route.
I have 2 requests which would enhance the product even more.
1. The miles per hour should turn red when you're speeding.
2. The map updates should be available via download even if you charge a fee to cover your bandwidth.
IMO as a internet user that downloads over 100 Gigabytes a month to say your map database is too large for download is absurd.
