Before my trucking days, back in '78, me and a buddy was welding in a ship yard at Marathon LeTourneau driving from Monroe, La to Vicksburg, Ms everyday. We worked the evening shift from 4 pm - 4:30 am. Most mornings of that 1-1/2 hr drive, there was a trucker that called himself "Mater Man" (Tomato Man). He was always west bound at 104 MPH. Those mornings, that trip turned into about 45 minutes for us.

Yeah. I believe so. It was like that across all makes I believe. ‘84 was when FL did the change. Some early had mech but by ‘85 sales year they were electric.
I do know the early phaseout overlap of the 352 into the 362 coe’s in ‘83-‘84 had 362 with electric while the 352 still had mech. -
If they would’ve taken 20-30 mph off then the stories would at least be believable. Nobody was doing 135 or even remotely close to it especially in a loaded truck. It’s impossible to even overcome the physics in an empty semi, let alone one that was supposedly loaded.Feedman, Last Call and M22 rockcrusher Thank this.

While I absolutely agree most is lunch counter talk. There in fact was trucks that ran that fast. There is basic set up over 130 mph. I've been fast in a truck. It's possible.
There was trucks geared way faster than this.

I’m not saying you didn’t hear the stories. I find it hard to believe a loaded truck is going down the road that fast when Tyrone Malone set the land speed record at the time (in 1979) at just under 115 in a purpose built single axle truck.Feedman, Last Call and M22 rockcrusher Thank this.

I’ve been fast in a truck too back when I was young and stupid. Going from 100 to 130 is entirely different than getting from 70 to 100. A truck wouldn’t have had a whole advertising campaign built around it in the late 70’s and early 80’s if it was so common for all the big straps to scoot to Cali at 130. A 115mph truck on the salt flat would’ve been no big deal. Heck they could’ve drug their loaded wagon out there and showed him up if they had 15-20mph on him.

Well that was a publicity stunt for one. Amd second, most the guys that could,or have done it. Are not the guys sitting at lunch counters talking about it.
