    Hi guys,

My company truck rear tires are currently at 4/32. My question is will Indiana DOT ground the truck if the tire tread is 2/32 on ANY of the tire grooves or would it have to be 2/32 across the whole tire?

I’ve notified my supervisor 3 weeks ago the tires are 4/32 and he’s yet to even take the initial first steps of getting a quote on tires. He has a reputation of not wanting to put any money into the trucks and it’s like pulling teeth to get any truck maintenance done. So the reason I’m asking if DOT will ground the truck at 2/32 tire depths regardless if it’s one tire groove or evenly worn 2/32 all the way across is because I have my suspicion that the tires won’t be replaced when they reach 2/32. At that point he’s going to put me in a position where I’ll have to refuse to drive the truck, regardless if he threatens termination or what not.

    Thanks fellas.

Those tires must be fun in the snow.

I would just find another job, but that’s me and my miserable demeanor :)

2/32" is the legal minimum. Any less is OOS.
    from 393.75:

    (b) Any tire on the front wheels of a bus, truck, or truck tractor shall have a tread groove pattern depth of at least 4/32 of an inch when measured at any point on a major tread groove. The measurements shall not be made where tie bars, humps, or fillets are located.
    (c) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, tires shall have a tread groove pattern depth of at least 2/32 of an inch when measured in a major tread groove. The measurement shall not be made where tie bars, humps or fillets are located.

I would be finding a new job asap, before you actually have to refuse to drive the truck.

Find another job if they are that picky on tires in the winter time. But to answer your question any area of the tire on rear and trailer need to be replaced at 2/32" and 4/32" on front tire. I never come close to this but it is the law.

The measurement should be across the 4 wear bars of the tire, not just one side or the other.

Tire don’t make the inspection, truck or trailer don’t move! That’s my philosophy. Monday I refused to haul a load until the tires were changed on the trailer. I was actually shocked the previous driver hauled it in one tire was completely bald.
