Alright, I thought I’d try something called Steam, and I don’t like it at all.

Apparently their site is set up so you can only play the games on their site. Screw that.

I like GOG better, where you can actually download the file and install it manually so just playing it doesn’t even require an internet connection.

Steam has been around about 20 years. It's the most prolific PC game store by a huge margin. You can run in offline mode just fine, but the steam client is like a minimally intrusive DRM. GOG is great and all but doesn't hold a candle to Steam. But then who am I to talk since I own near 943 games on steam but 214 on GOG. I'm probably pretty biased.

For my use case on Linux it's truly zero hassle running steam games.

Also for GOG you should check out the Galaxy client. It offers easy patching and cloud save syncing.

I have Steam. I also purchased a Steamdeck earlier this year, which allows me to play my Steam games on a portable device.......Graphics are just as awesome as they are on my MSI gaming laptop

I tried to get Might and Magic - Clash of Heroes for Windows off Steam, since I figure the Windows version would be a lot better than the Nintendo DS version. They have an option called “back up and restore games” which I assume means downloading the files.

Steam only allows this with games that are installed, and since I have a Mac laptop MaM - CoH won’t install. If I could at least get the .exe I could load and install it on my Playonmac app.

Therein lies the reason for my annoyance with Steam.

To their credit though, they do have Heroes of Might and Magic 6 and 7, which GOG doesn’t.

Ah. See, there's your problem. Macs are for posting about how you use a Mac on Facebook, not playing games. Really though, it's a 3rd class citizen when it comes to anything but browser games. It's even worse than Linux since Valve has made a concerted effort to make it a viable gaming platform. You can always use parallels or bootcamp and play on Windows.

It’s been able to handle most of what I have. They’ll run any retro game if those are your thing, and OpenEmu makes a fine emulator.
