    Razororange, has the answer to this, and the reasoning for ratchets. Never heard of a place outlawing snap binders. A company speccing for a company driver, maybe, but if you're the O/O, it's your show, not the shippers.

    I swore I remember CO outlawed snap binders but maybe my memory is hazy. I googled it but can’t find it. I’ve also had a shipper only want ratchet binders one time. Anyways here’s my last 2 loads. This week wasn’t nearly as profitable as last week.

    I remember someone trying to tell me that snap binders were illegal about 15 years ago but it never came to be.
    These are the ones we use on structural. Pretty slick cuz they’re adjustable plus they lock. Snap binders are so handy with structural cuz you can take up so much slack with just one motion. Sometimes with a ratchet you can wind it tight but then have to redo it again to get another link in the chain. If I’m hauling a single bridge girder I prefer ratchets cuz you know you can get them tight. Sometimes with a snap binder, one link on the chain is too loose but the next link might be too tight.

    What you might be thinking you heard, was that DOT does want snap binder handles secured, and you can no longer use a bungee to lock it closed. That's why these should be part of your equipment when using snap binders, which I did, since I preferred them. It's a handle lock.

    Yep, the built in lock is what makes these legal...and I do like that adjustment screw. It's the one thing I wish the ones I used had, but they are more expensive so a lock on the handle is fine with me. :)

    I just wrap the excess chain around the handle. If I don’t have enough excess to get a good wrap, then I will wrap it as best I can and zip tie the chain to itself so it “looks” like it’s wrapped. Not sure how “legal” that is as far as locking the handle, but it seems to satisfy the Iowa DOT, which is good enough for me! LOL

    That is all I ever used for years .
    Now the company I am leased to does not allow them on the truck along with quite a few shippers.
