Engine is a kubota z482 in my apu , I have owned this since nearly new and it has been religiously serviced well before the recommended drain intervals .
About a year ago it started using a small amount of oil like half a qaurt every 500 hours , this engine has 21000 hours on it so I wasn't concerned.
So a couple months ago it just slowly stopped using any oil ..WHY ? ...I haven't changed oil brands or weights and the operating conditions are the same .

    JoeyJunk Thanks this.

Maybe you had a sticky piston ring that freed up?

Does paper towel show a fuel ring if you drip some oil on it .. engine started sealing better or fuel is replacing oil burned .

I've actually never checked it that way but I have oil samples pulled on it when I change the truck oil and they keep coming back clean .

I will also add that i bought that unit with 7605 hours on the clock very cheap and know the 1st owner routinely ran well beyond the recommended 1000 hour drain intervals, I've never ran it over 800 hours without a drain.

If oil samples are good then its likely a sticky piston ring as others have said. I would also let it all settle for a while and check to ensure its not got water in it as well incase that is the issue. Unlikely with oil samples but hay better safe then sorry.

Otherwise if the samples are clean just run it and keep checking for water and fuel. My guess is it ran harder then usual one night due to say slightly bad fuel, high elevation, extrme condtions whatever and got JUST hot enough to free stuff up or just worked itself loose.

    #### Brad I forgot to send you the bill on that repair sure am glad you reminded me.

I would think a ring stuck would use more oil than that. However that’s bout the only answer I can think of that would self heal.

I appreciate the replies , it's really just a curiosity thing and half a qaurt over 500 hours isn't much , I've just never seen an engine go backwards on oil consumption without some help.
With good maintenance these Kubotas are good to around 35000 hours so having paid 2500.00 for the unit it doesent owe me a dime .

I wonder about how these engines get broken in.

I bought a new 95 f 350 with the first powerstroke. It always used a bit of oil until I went to California and hauled a trailer back to Idaho. After pulling that 17 mile pull from Baker to Stateline on I 15, and really working the engine for the first time, oil consumption went away.

I wonder how they seat the rings on these small engines?

JoeyJunk, Rideandrepair and bzinger Thank this.
