I'm on an account now that doesn't haul HazMat but my company still requires me to complete updated HazMat training.

While completing it this morning I was reminded of a load I had that required 7 placards.

Two of them, both 1993 Flammable are similar but different.

I remember the shipper said one was required overseas but not here in the US. It was the only HazMat load I pulled without fully understanding every placard.

Anyhow, what is the difference between those two? 20200917_093922.jpg

Ah, ok. The containers I was pulling usually were sea going only.

The one on the left says "Flammable Liquids". One on the right says "Combustible Liquids". Difference between the two is the flash point on Flammables is 139 degrees or less. On Combustibles flashpoint is from 140 to 200 degrees. You can use the Flammable placards for Combustible on a truck. Not the other way around. On the rails no you have to have the Combustible placards if the cargo requires it.

one of the few remaining US only quirks, the international does not use combustible. US rail is going to do everything possible to get the Feds off their backs after East Palistine

The one with the red bottom is for flammable liquid, the one with the white bottom is for combustible liquid.

Safety is usually one of the smaller percentages in any corporate budget.

Perhaps I should have said everything possible regarding the US 'only' correct descriptions of HM.

The place to insure placard/paperwork compliance IS the in-gate 'cause once it is inside it is now their problem.

As far as well-funded willing compliance, we can only dream.

Fair enough, i just have too often seen "safety" measures only implemented to lower insurance deductibles, and they rarely actually do anything to actually improve safety
