A tsunami warning was issued Saturday for Hawaii, and the California coast and parts of Alaska were under a tsunami advisory after a devastating earthquake struck Chile, killing more than 120 people. The magnitude-8.8 quake collapsed buildings and bridges and sent a tsunami racing across the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the tsunami could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the Hawaii.

The first waves were expected to reach Hawaii at 3:19 p.m. CST Saturday.

The center's director called for "urgent action to protect lives and property" in Hawaii. He said he doesn't know how big the waves will be, but said he expects them to be the largest to hit Hawaii since 1964. He said there should be enough time to alert everyone in harm's way to get to safety.

The advisory for California and Alaska is the agency's lowest-level alert.
Tsunami warnings are in effect over a wide area, including South America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands.

The earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Hawaii appeared to escape any major tsunami unleashed by the giant earthquake off the coast of Chile, giving residents and tourists relief even as they remained on guard Saturday afternoon.

Tsunami surges of six to 12 inches in height hit the "Big Island" of Hawaii beginning at 11:38 a.m. local time, 34 minutes later than oceanographers previously forecast, said Bill Hanson, administrative officer with the Hawaii County Civil Defense.

Those were far lower than the waves of as high as 14 that feet some officials had predicted. Mr. Hanson said that while the tsunami threat was not entirely over, the fact that no large surges have hit so far means more destructive ones are less likely.

The Big Island had been expected to face the biggest threat of wave damage, with the city of Hilo taking a particular hit. Models from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, had predicted "very rough waves" from six to 10 feet high by the time the tsunami hit Hawaii, said Barry Hirshorn, a geophysicist for the center. But no damaging tsunamis were reported anywhere else in the state.

The Tsunami center's Website reported waves of as high as 3.2 feet on some islands, with many sensor on the islands detecting waves of less that a foot.
