Need help from the winter driving experts

If you need to chain, then park. I've been doing this for five years and never chained, never needed to. All I run is MN-ND-SD-WI-IA. Plan to miss a few days of work in the winter. What are they gonna do, fire you? Give them a few hours, they'll fire the guy who put his truck in the ditch.

 

If you're running Minneapolis to Seattle and refuse to chain, you'll starve to death first. The west is a different game.

The question you have to ask yourself on those days, is it worth driving at 20 mph to get to the better running, or just say the hell with it.
