I sold a little steer to a guy my son works with. That was about fourteen years ago. He was going to feed it up, butcher it, and have some good meat.
I told him "Don't let your kids make a pet out of it. Don't give it a name, don 't scratch it's ears, don't hand feed it, don't do anything that makes that steer into a family friend".
I could have saved my breath. His little girls made a pet out of it and that steer will probably die of old age. They gentled it down so far that they can put a rope halter on it and ride it around.

Atleast name it "Sirloin" or something that reminds you what its there for. I would absolutely get a pig and name it "Bacon" when i get around to buying some land.

I love birria. We used to order it at work. One day, I ate it and it tasted like beef. I was like, "WTF? This doesn't taste like goat!" "Goat is expensive. Sometimes they use beef." I was disappointed. There's a birria place on Hwy 99 near Tulare with truck parking I want to stop at when I have the time.

I've skinned many of them. Unfortunately it makes more sense to sell them and buy meat now though. A $300 goat around here will only yield about 20-30 pounds if you're lucky.

Setting aside the issue of the mother's actions leading up to the auction and focusing on the legal situation-

It is not theft. It is breach of contract, a civil matter. The only reason the police got involved is one party is a quasi-governmental body (I don't know how the fair is organized, nor do I care to research). Considering that restitution was offered, the Fair didn't have a legal leg to stand on when they used police resources to force completion of the contract. Had the Fair gone to the County Board and asked for $1,000 to sue the person over $200 of goat meet it would be ridiculed as wasteful spending. Somehow, someone got the police to act, thus no justification was needed for wasting tax dollars.

These things happen all the time, our local 4H even has a contingency plan for when it happens. The clowns in charge of this auction went full throttle into dung heap.

The way I read it said she was paid for the animal, kept the money, and by her own admission...

“The barn was mostly empty and at the last minute I decided to break the rules and take the goat that night and deal with the consequences later.”

I'm no legal scholar by any means, but if I pay you for an animal, it's in my possession, and while I'm not there you decide to take it. That should be charged as theft in my mind.

If someone stole a $900 animal from me I would absolutely want the police to do everything necessary to recover my property.

The buyer had no problem with voiding the sale. It was only the Fair who acted as broker that got pissy. Restitution was offered, at that point it is a civil matter. This was about "teaching them a lesson", not enforcing the law.
