Try "HIghway Use tax". Most states have the tax rate built into the fuel tax you pay at the pump...OR and NM are two that don't. Remember that just because you don't purchase fuel in a state, you still have to pay the tax for fuel consumed crossing or operating within the state. I have also heard it called the "fuel consumption tax".

Why do you have to pay a fuel tax to a state you didn't buy fuel in? I realize I'm not an O/O, and will never be, but this doesn't make a lick of sense. Isn't that double-taxation?

the Highway Use Tax, is just that...a tax for the usage of the highways in the state, a specific rate per mile on the total miles you traveled through or within the state...this is not the "fuel tax" that is in the fuel purchase, on top of the "use" tax...

Just goes to show, there is a lot to pay attention to as an O/O, and the only reason I could see anyone thinking about becoming an O/O going with a Lease/Op before taking the complete jump into owning...to learn the ins and outs of the responsibilities an O/O has to deal with daily. Talk about paperwork...a headache all in itself!

OK my next question, is there a way or a site that helps figure out how many miles you drove from state line to state line?

Yes I know odom but, lets just say he forgot to reset it. :biggrin_25526:

There isn't any site or program that will figure out the mileage. Smaller fleets use the actual hub miles and the bigger fleets use the QualCom mileage (which can be off by quite a bit). When I had to track my IFTA I just had a note pad and pen handy...at the state line I just wrote down the odometer reading and at the end of the day I figured each states mileage for the day. If for some reason I forgot to write the odometer reading down I would use my map and/or mapping program to find the closest number. Also for audit reasons I always wrote down the route I took in each state just incase the figures were ever questioned.

How to keep track of state miles.....

    Notepad, pen, set trip odometer....
Notate miles when you cross state lines...
Then notate miles on a trip/fuel log like I do after the "post trip" at the end of the day....

worst case scenario you can always use google maps and plot your course and it'll give you the distance in miles..
