Yes. It was a Cummins reman thing to do so. They would recon sc’s to bc 2 specs all the time. Bringing oil psi down stops bearing washout and helps bearings last longer. A Cummins oil pump is like a fire pump. Very high volume. It is overkill already. It pumps a ton of oil if un regulated.Oxbow, OLDSKOOLERnWV and mile marker 27 Thank this.

Dang, what a stack of shims. The original 290 CPL 217, had a 17 button. It always seemed kinda lame for even a 290(compared to my ‘75 W9) but that CPL had a .050 timing. Maybe that was why?Oxbow and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

The original cam follower gaskets had two stacked and I know that’ll be irrelevant, since I’m changing CPL’s. One gasket is 1mm and the other is .5mm.

You should absolutely time the cam followers using the correct tool. All 3 followers can have different thickness shims. What spec are you timing it to?
Oxbow and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this. -
Do you remember why Cummins done away with the high pressure oil pump setup…?Oxbow Thanks this. -
^^^^^^ this.
I try to make sure each cam follower is put back in the same location I removed it from. Mine are marked 1 2 3 with a pin punch….Oxbow and mile marker 27 Thank this. -
I Oxbow’d myself again lol….Oxbow Thanks this. -
.035 is what the CPL says. Was recommended by someone on this forum, to set it at .040, with that CPL, for easier cold weather starting.Oxbow Thanks this.

I’ve got 2 jig timers, if I can figure out how to use them. When I get to that point, I may start a separate thread, so y’all can teach me something.Oxbow Thanks this.
