Coffee Drinking May Reduce Risk of Stroke

After years and years of listing off all of the things that are bad for us....1200 WOAI news reprots researchers meeting here today announced that there is at least one thing that's good for us.

Coffee!

Research presented at the International Stroke Conference in San Antonio today indicates people who drink coffee, across age and gender lines, have a statistically lower risk of having a stroke than those who don't.

"Now what we have to do, is find the mechanism the controls why this is happening, and what particular thing is happening in coffee that seems to be offering that benefit," said Dr. Daniel Lackland, a professor of cardiovascular epidemiology at the Medical University of South Carolina, and one of the authors of the study.

Lackland says people who never drink coffee have a 27% higher risk of having a stroke than individuals who told researchers that they are coffee drinkers. He says 23,000 people were surveyed for the study.
