Maybe I misunderstood you but I thought you originally said you suspected it to be DPF related and that black soot inside stack would be confirmation.

Mine has done this a handful of times.
From what I’ve been told, it’s due to the DPF being unable to reach correct temperature during regen and it keeps feeding fuel into the system in an attempt to bring the temperature up. This is likely caused by a faulty sensor or a partially clogged DPF.
Last time mine done this it threw a code and I was able diagnose it.
However it cleared up once it completed another regen.

I had a faulty EGR cooler dump a tremendous amount of coolant down the exhaust and apparently it gathers in the DPF and SCR and prematurely clogs it. I plan to have mine cleaned here it soon.
However I have noticed if I do not idle the truck long (over couple hours) I don’t have this problem.

I wish I got a code to at least give some idea or lead. Was yours pouring thick smoke like in the video? It was worse than that even before I started videoing I was blocking out the sun lol

Yep thick white smoke just like that. Got thicker with acceleration, scared the #### out of me.
It’s done it about 3 times before it ever threw a code. However it’s only done it about 4 times in the past 6 months. I wouldn’t worry to much about it unless it continues to do it. Last time mine done it was over 25k miles ago ( right after I changed the EGR cooler) and haven’t had a problem since.

This was happening to me a while back. I asked @Goodysnap and he was spot on once again. Cracked or breached dpf filter whilst doing a passive regen. Put a new Cummins dpf filter in and never done it since.

Not sure if I want to hope for it being that or not haha the other option is coolant in the cylinders which is probably worse. How much did that end up costing you? Also was yours smoking all the time even at idle or just under throttle and only when it was doing a passive regen? Hard to know when its doing a passive regen Ive never noticed it do one at all honestly while im driving so cant say if it was doing one today while it was smoking. I do have times when i come to a stop and go into low gear or neutral that ill hear the turbo spinning up and it starts regenning till I start driving again and it kicks off

Think the new filter was around $2500 if I remember correctly. Mine would only smoke when under throttle when it was doing a regen. Like you I could never tell when it was doing one passively driving down the road. Started doing it once a week at the same place every week. I run a dedicated account so I knew it was coming. Pulled over and yeah it was doing a regen. Pulled over the next week and it was doing a regen again. That’s when I asked on here.

I’ll be back home Tuesday night so could get the correct price then. Came with new clamps etc.

That does sound quite similar to my situation then because once I pulled over and stopped my truck started doing a regen so maybe it was doing it passively when on the highway also. Dont worry about the exact price though thats alright. I'll find out for sure tomorrow morning when the shop has a look haha
