Won't make a bit of difference. I rearly stop at brake checks, and then not to check my brakes. I take a look at my brakes everytime I stop and get out. Those turn outs will not stop idiots from lighting them up on down hills. This is what you get when you have trrainees training new driverrs.

I run Donner all the time. RE6205 and I.T.D. are 100% correct. The grade before Nyack, (Brake Check), is 6% for 1 1/2-2 miles. Not long, BUT, that is the problem. The maniacs throw it into OD and hit 65-70+ MPH coming down that hill. Then they see the CHP at the bottom, and they are on the brakes hard, in OD, with no hold back from engine. To me the grade that sneaks up on these guys is Alta. They made it down Blue Canyon, with a little smoke, and think "Oh this aint' so bad". Then, they fly around the downhill curve at Alta and find a 5 1/2-6% straight away, hit 65-70 MPH again. That's where I see most of the bellowing smoking at. I always stop at that Break Check and log it, even when I'm empty. You never know when CHP will be there. Now when you try to pull out, all the guys that don't stop are flying by at 65+ MPH. On a side note, about that Break Check...When that snow melts you will be shocked to see how many piss jugs, poo bags, and garbage is there. It's way more than you can even imagine You have to see it to believe me.

Have any of you guys had to use an escape ramp? How does the phone call go when you call the safety department to let them know you need a wrecker and the truck is torn up?

It might make a big difference. Since that driver didn’t stop at the brake check area,he may be looking at a fine. Not to mention WFX might hand him his walking papers afterwards!

Look at it this way...it takes less time to stop at the brake check, even if you have to adjust a brake or two, than it does to get stopped by CHP, sit there while they write you a ticket...big ticket...and all that other good stuff that goes along with getting a ticket. Telling the boss, telling the wife, writing the check...big check...getting the note from your insurer that your rates are going up, and having another scratch on your driving record...none of these are as easy as stopping like the big sign says to.
Or, what the heck, take a chance. You might get away with it and if not we can sure use the revenue.
    Your choice entirely.
