Hey guys quick question? i am looking at an 04 t800 with cummins isx with 450hp and 10 spd tranny with a 3.55 rear end. How will this work for me pulling a hopper bottom grain trailer in and out of fields that are sometimes a little soft at harvest time. Im guessing it should have enough torque in low gears to work fine but am just wondering if i should look for 3.70 or 3.90 or even 4.11 instead. As far as out on the road we are mainly rolling hills with some flat country added in. just not to many mtns in North Dakota to deal with. Oh yeah we are usually loaded to about 80000. thanks for your time.

If you are only 80k, I don't see why it wouldn't be fine. If you are in soft stuff alot I would be more interested in full lockers.

Don't worry about the 3:55's, I've got 3:36's and I hardly ever use low. Having had low geared trucks in the past IMO it's not worth killing highway driving for <5% off road driving. Tire size make a difference also, 22.5-24.5?

    Big Duker Thanks this.

for the farm 3.55 with a 18spd and short rubber would be a good combo but with a 10spd I would rather have 3.70 or 3.90 on short rubber or 4.11 or 4.33 on tall rubber for me its not so much as low hole but reverse being to tall my Mack has 3.70 short rubber and a 13 for me that is as high of geared truck you would need for a farm more reduction in Reverse would be better the n-14's have 3.90's short rubber and 10spds and do fine over the road yeah you guys do very little of road but on the farm its 50%

22.5's and 3:55's is about the same as 3:70's and 24.5's. I've got 2 trucks with 10spd's, both with 3:70's and both pull hoppers. Never once has either truck been stuck or been in a situation where 1 or 2 gear jumps would have made any difference in whether or not the truck got out of a field. Plain and simple if you were ordering new I'd be a little more picky about the gears. However if everything else about the truck is great, don't worry about the 3:55's.

Never been stuck because of too high of gears, always because the truck shouldn't have been there in the first place.

I'd go with it. I'd feel better about that combo than some guys who pull 650bu wagons with half-ton pickups out of fields and down the road.

oh, we've all seen those guys. They actually believe the truck is in control of the wagon, not the other way around.:biggrin_2559:

it's not so much as stuck just the low hole and reverses make it nice around the bins, I know alot easier on the clutch than tall geared road trucks
