I go to a shipper to pick up a preloaded company trailer and it didn't have auto inflation system on the trailer wheels. I noticed that one of the tires was unseated. I called maintenance and they said they can't get anyone out until in the morning. I said f* it I will fix it myself. I pull the trailer up onto a couple boards and got the bad tire up in the air. I put two two inch ratchet straps around the tire and got them snugged down enough to get the tire seated with a little air. I take the straps off and locate a nail sized hole on top of tire. I plug the tire with tire plug and rubber cement. I proceed to put air into the tire like normal.

    BOOM

The inside wall of the tire exploded. I'm guessing the rim might have wore a spot on it or maybe this cheap ##* company should stop using these retread tires. You can't tell me that a sidewall on a tire should last 100,000 miles.

That brings me to my next question.
WHY CAN'T SOMEONE DEVELOP A SOLID RUBBER TIRE FOR SEMI TRAILERS???

Unless it was a real heavy load, I would have ignored it and hit the road.

Yep. I actually managed to get the tire reseated though. It was just a crappy tire. Sidewall gave out around 60 or 70 ish psi.

A solid rubber tire would ride like crap and be heavy as heck

Yep. Some customers would get mad because we wouldn't just air up a tire that had been flat. We would fix flats, but we're dismounting first and checking thr sidewall inside

Would it ride like crap though? If you only have them on the trailer and keep your air tires on the tractor. I would think you wouldn't notice it in the cab.
