Does ISS-2 numbers make a company the wrong choice.

An ISS-2 score does not necessarily tie in to the numbers in a carrier's MCMIS (Motor Carrier Management Information System) report, which is where you get the information you posted. ISS stands for "Inspection Selection System" and is mostly affected by recent events. For example one of my customer's shipped a battery via DHL without the proper manifest. When the crap hit the fan my client's was classified ISS - 2 which means they were recommended to be inspected even though their MCMIS score was acceptable under DOT's guidelines. As time goes by their score improves under the ISS score along with their SEA's (Safety Evaluation Area's) improve as well.

It's like the credit rating of a motor carrier. If you are late paying a credit card your credit score drops but it will pick up in time as you make more payments on time.

A motor carrier that has a recommendation to be audited (ISS-2) does not mean that the company is bad, as long as their MCMIS is good. It means they got in trouble recently. Email me if you still have questions, I tried to simplify it as much as I could.

Yes, you are correct, the MCMIS report would have a lot more detail than the data available for free on the safersys database. The safersys database only has the three key elements Driver, Vehicle and Overall Safety Area Evaluations score. It does not tell you what kinds of violations, however the MCMIS is a very powerful tool but they are not the same. The MCMIS scores are based on roadside inspections and accidents, the SEA includes other types of violations such as the hazmat scenario I described on my earlier post.
