Most of the so called shady companies are operated by people from eastern European countries, many operate and dispatch from those same countries.

People pick on GP Transco but they're one of the good ones there. They're a W-2 company. The guy may be of that descent, but that company has the look of a powerhouse in the industry, and they fairly large too. Their drivers say their terminal has all the amenities in there, like a gym, laundry, etc. I like that they have newer equipment versus the company I worked for. The truck I had with company was dang near at 1 million miles. It was in ok shape. Honestly, if I were to make a move, I'd consider GP. I heard some guy couldn't hired there because he had too many jobs. Thats unlike the 1099 gigs, they'll put anybody with a soul in a truck.

The simple rule of thumb, no matter the city or state, is to avoid companies that pay drivers on a 1099 unless you don’t have a choice. Very few that pay a driver on 1099 do it properly. Most do it to avoid employment taxes, work comp insurance, etc.

There are plenty of good companies that pay on W2 in the areas you mentioned. Scratch the 1099’s off your list and start researching what’s left.

This is good to hear about. My record, well, I've never had any trouble with the law of any kind, no arrests, no DUIs (I don't really drink), no accidents, maybe a few parking tickets in the 90s, stuff like "no parking on the left side of the street on Wednesday, that total gotcha stuff. I've been out of the US for 20 years so I have NOTHING on my driving record. From what I see they only keep anything 3-5 years anyway, so whatever I would have had way back when should be long gone by now. My bad thing is that I have no recent driving experience. Over here, I don't drive, no record period. And same in the US after 1999 or so. I did a driving job a couple years in Chicago in the early 90s. I've done some auto drive aways between NYC and Chicago and also Chicago and San Francisco. And a NYC to LA van trip once.

When you did drive for a 1099 company, what were you able to earn ? Was it decent? If I'm not able to get on with a good W-2 carrier, it might come to that.

Thanks for the leads on Chicago area companies. I may not end up trying Chicago but it's a place I know pretty well and have friends there.

    Thanks!

Thanks, yeah I'll try to be super careful with companies like that if I come across them. I'm just considering Chicago as one possible alternative, but it's good to know.

Yeah, thanks. I've seen people up here say that often, to avoid the 1099 places, so I'll try to do that.

It varied with that company. The biggest check I ever had was for $2400. They may use that number to recruit other drivers. I only saw that number 1 time. Most of the time it ranged between 1100 and 1500 dollars. Because it was 1099, I had to live modestly due to taxes being taken out by me. It was steady money though. It paid the bills. Now if you go to a W-2 company, that 1100 to 1500 can be your average after taxes, insurance, and in my case, child support comes out, provided you run enough miles or get a high enough cpm(if the company doesn't cover a lot of territory). Since you've been out of the truck for so long, would you have to do a refresher or start all over with the CDL process?
