OK, thanks. I used to use FlyingJ's service when they first started it several years ago. But I have been away from trucking and don't know the current situation. I am thinking of going with a cell provider but wonder if it the cost will be exorbitant.
Flyingj communications WiFi Extender (dissapointed)

im with alltel, and im paying about 65 dollars/mo for mine.
They were the only carrier i found with unlimited, everyone else cuts you off at 5 GB...i could kill that in a week. -
im with alltel too they terminated my aircard acount for to much roaming but now ive pigged backed my internet onto my blackberry for $30 i can conect it via bluetooth or a usb conector
-
unless you are streaming movies or maybe online gaming (I don't do that so not 100% sure on how much data is used) you will probably not go over the 5gb. I have verizion's for a couple of years and then just switched a few months ago to at&t (better coverage where i spend most of my time running) and never have i been over 5g in a month. (yes i went back and looked when i switched to att).
If i do want to do any major downloading (music, video, or other large files) i either wait till i get home (dsl) or use the many free wifi sites at rest areas (Tx and Ia) come to mine. -
Is it 110AC too?? Just went to Flying J E Store and all I saw a toy Belkin. Which is great if you carry it in to the cafe to be with in 30 feet and plug in your power supply in to drive it all. I have the HIGHWAY802 Long Range WiFi Transmitter/Receiver and refresh (it) to find signals from any available, anywhere I go. 12V DC, low draw, 9" by 10.5" by about 3" thick - BUT the antenna is 12dBi, 47 inches. Cell phones are . . . well, cell phones. (and cost money to use) nice for making a phone call though.

I too am not happy with this item. Only once has it ever provided a better signal then my laptop alone. And more then once it provided much worse. The added problem that it can only be used to bring in Fly J SSID is truly frustrating and stated no such thing on the box. Very unhappy with it.
As for why I use Wifi like Fly J..... It costs less for a year then what cell is for 3 months. I can't afford that right now, and they are threatening to cap bandwidth like mins at all companies. Some have already. I cant do that because I am a gamer. Thats my form of entertainment on the road. Its not that hard to plan trips around these truckstops anyway. Most of us already do anyways. And maybe this item sucks, but the FLY J Wifi service is not that bad at all. Its the most stable out here. They use a full broadband connection, were as TA/Petro and Pilots use aircards. Not sure about IdleAir. My guess is its Satallite. -
yeah Idleair is sat based last I checked up on them, as long as you don't mind a ping of 1000 it's great for gaming....which means it probably isn't for you

I used to use the wifi I got tired of the signals dropping and the speeds ranging from pretty good to very poor. I also prefer not to stop at truckstops overnight so I got an aircard from sprint. I have one of the old unlimited plans . If I had the 5gb I would go over the limit just from streaming Bob and Tom and Rush on a daily basis. Not to mention utube.

when i was on teh road, i use wifi. flying j had the better system. it was a t1 connection. pilot use to be sat. but now is going to dsl. but it is still debatable whether it will be as good as flying j.
pilot is wondering wifi just like TA, Loves, and All American.
now some truck stops were able to provide a faster connection. but alot depends on the distance from the switch.
as for using a cellular based broadband, you are limited to the amount of usage. and when you go over it, it will cost you alot more than the truck stop wifi.
now in iowa, there are some rest areas that have free wifi, and also there are just a few truck stops with free wifi. -
Just to note, we do not do the WiFi at "All American" locations.
