I bet most of you think I’m crazy but I remember moving an open bowl cat scraper several years ago that had 1 big engine…it was a 3406 jwac and the valve cover said 599 hp. It was probably a b model iirc or maybe a c but definitely a mechanical fuel system.
Does anyone know anything about this, because it might be fun in a truck?

I'm guessing the zeros in 500 deteriorated and now look like nines.

No 580 was common in industrial builds. I have seen higher

Could be, but I also remember thinking that it was odd to be 599 and then checking that what it said in kw matched.
Although maybe I am just crazy lol

I'm looking in the former models section of the Cat handbook, and the only single engine open bowl scraper that comes close to that horsepower, in the era of the 3400 series engines, is a 651E. It had a 3412 engine though with a rating of 550 hp in gears 1 and 2, and 605 hp in gears 3 through 8.

They say there is a 660HP C model. I suppose anything is possible.

In my opinion a mechanical will never be as strong or efficient as an electronic engine. The Acert built right with the right file will produce more HP and live longer than any other combination. However nothing is as cool as a beefed up mechanical. The right truck pump to really get what you want outta a mechanical is hard to find. Converting a genset pump can be done if you know what pieces to get and from where.

It was probably a 621 but i don’t remember…possibly the valve cover had been from something else. It appears that there is indeed a 599 hp genset engine.

I wouldn’t argue that a computer engine can’t do better. Actually I have a truck I work on with a c15 that will slip a 2250 clutch like it’s covered in grease. Despite the advantages I prefer the mechanical ones because I don’t need anyone to give me permission to make it do what I want and I don’t need someones computer to figure out why it won’t run and there’s something fun about a strong mechanical. I used to have a big cam that would break the tires loose in 7th on a 9 speed with an empty hopper trailer…it was a lot of fun hauling grain to the river because I could pass most of the new shiny trucks the rich farmers were driving with my 9370 that was half paint less on the first good hill and the grumbling on the cb at the terminal was worth the wasted fuel
