My experience at Roadway........

I worked part time (casual) at 705 in Lake Park (Valdosta) GA when I was in college.

Road drivers did nothing more than show up. They didn't hook, pre trip.....nothing. Set and power were pre hooked because that's the way the union rolled. They'd show up with their rolling luggage and mounted CB from the motel they put them in. Kick the tire, light the fire and they were gone.

Everything had a bid. You couldn't just jump on a forklift to move something, you had to yell, "TOW MOTOR" as loud as you could to get a bid forklift driver to come and move a pallet.

Everything was silly. What was silliest to me at the time, is that I'd be working my tail off pulling the drag line, (for those that don't know what a drag line is, picture a slot car device that went all the way around the dock in a giant oval. People would unload stuff and put them in a cart and take a piece of chalk and write on the blackboard attached to it what door it was going to. You would be standing by those doors and pull it off and put it in the bay......it was tiresome and busy work). Anyway, a supervisor would come by and say, "Pull down door 80." And you're like, "Dude, I'm kinda busy at the moment, why don't YOU pull down door 80?" Come to find out, if a union member caught a supervisor doing something like that (Union work), they could claim 8 hours of pay.

And petty......the punishment for being on the wrong side of management was to "Shift a load". We'd get trailer loads of mulch in in 50 lb bags. If someone pissed them off they would get to shift the load. "Well, it's over by 5,000 lbs in the nose. You have to move 100 bags from the front to the rear." This in the south GA heat......on their knees......one bag at a time. Then, when they got done, they'd say it's off by 1,000 on the rear, and make them move it back.

I have no love for the Teamsters. I think between them and management they've managed to screw themselves.......so be it. I'm sorry that so many people lost their jobs, I truly am and I wish them all the very best. But, in the long run, ya'll and you daddies screwed you.

 

Fair enough, I’m a little sensitive about this subject. I lived through the ABF/CFCC merger, the last NMFA strike, double breasting, and the CF debacle. There was and is a concerted union busting trend over the last three decades teamsters have been a whipping boy for Wall Street greed. Unions have their bad points but this YRC mess is directly attributable to Dollar Bill Zollars and concern bout stock price and shareholders than anything else. The Teamsters voted on concessions is what allowed a poorly run company to last this long and piddle away a 700 million bailout. The IBT just wanted Yellow to make the agreed upon payment to their HW&P fund and give them a 15 day extension to do just that

 

As far as i know the company pays all ins.Other than that theyre pretty much a poor outfit here.Tractors and trailers are rust buckets.I remeber as a kid Roadway was the place to work.Those drivers made good money and you needed 5 yrs exp.Then Yellow bought them out........went downhill from there.

I usually don't get emotional on this site. But leave politics out of this. They are all a holes. All they care about are themselves Just like Yellow management. Hate them all..

Yup, was anti union until I became union. Still don't like it. But my bennies are great, easiest job I ever had.
