  1. You will fit in just fine, try earwigging for a time and use a mobile fone for help. Good luck.

Alison, I will tell you this; there are female truck drivers out there who use their radios, so it's not all males.

However do not be surprised if and when you key up that you have a bunch of horny, lonely, been-on-the-road-too-long w/o a date male truck drivers asking you about your physical stats or your 20. With that, you may even encounter some sexual harassment. Just brush it off if you can.

However I am sure there's also some out there that don't act that way.

I think getting a radio for your vehicle is a great idea, just keep in mind of what you might hear. Channel 19 has it's idiots, it's foul mouths, it's racists, etc....and it seems more common around truck stops. But you can catch a good convo every so often.

P.S. chicks that use CB radios are cool.

Alison, not sure how far off the beaten path you are going, but most cb's do not reach but a few miles. Unless you put a lot of money in one. Also you will have to due a lot of maintenance to keep up with all the technology you will need to reach out a long distance with one. I would rely on a good cell phone with a good antenna set-up for an emergency. A good cell phone and good antenna will be noticably less money than a Great cb set-up and much safer. Get a cb for recreational use and good cell phone system for emergencies.

Awesome advice. I really appreciate it. And brsims you make an excellent point; I didn't even consider the weirdos using their CBs. Also, nice advice about the cell phone. I hadn't really considered it. Guess I've been going with sprint too long... the service sucks for me.

I think I still want a CB just for use. Good to hear there's lady truckers out there too (ladytrucker2go)! Shane you make a good point too, overall I'm thinking I'll invest in a good cell phone and some ways to make sure I have signals far out of the way.

Hey Alison......just to give you a heads up, a good CB like a Uniden PC 68 or a Cobra 25 LTD and a good antenna like a Wilson 1000 magnet mount can get you heard up to 5 miles easy as long as you're not in the mountains or near a lot of tall buildings. If you don't mind a 9 foot tall antenna on your ride, a 102 inch whip with a 6 inch spring will get you heard a little further.

Keep in mind the heart of any CB radio is the antenna. A good antenna will let the radio both receive and transmit a long way. Don't fall for those junk 2 foot antennas you stick on glass, they're just that; junk.

Also keep in mind I believe it also takes a good antenna on the receiving end too....meaning this: you could have a good radio and a really good antenna, but Mr. Joe Schmoe don't-know-radios-for-squat has one of those little tiny 2 footer antennas....well he isn't going to hear you until you're 10 feet from him and then you'll have to also be that close just to hear him respond. Again the antenna is the hear and soul of the radio. You want the best you can buy.

As for the cell phone thing, I have had Sprint for 4 years....yeah their service didn't used to be all that good, then one day just about 3 weeks ago, I noticed my cell phone started getting more bars on it that it ever had before. Went in and talked to them about it asking if they put up a new cell tower near my home or something, they said they've started upgrading to 4 G's where everyone else is still on 3 G's....I don't know if they just did that to say that or what.

hahaha, i keep telling my girlfirend that i want to have a recording of her as for a " Radio check " cause when i ask i hardly ever get anyone to respond... but as stated before, when a chick gets on the radio guys go crazy and get all mouthy with them on the radio in more ways then one...
Alison, being a female def has its advantage on a cb, but again as stated above their are lots of creepy, lonley, honrney guys out there wanting to talk to anyone/thing that sounds like a female, but the best advantage you have is the on/off knob... if you hear stuff that you dont want to, simply shut it off..
best of luck on the cb... and have fun with it as well. it does help time pass by on the longer over night trips...

honestly i got help on one once, but im a guy, and I was on the freeway, ran out of fuel because one of my crossovers were shut off. didn't help much but i did meet a cool owner op with a nice pete that atleast tried to help me out. :p

Sadly, theres lot of areas that cell phones just dont have coverage.

And if you dont have a good antenna and a linear you're not likely to find anyone on teh CB in those areas late at night either. And if they're far enough away to need a linear, they're too far to be of much help unless its a real emergency and you can get them to call 911 for you.....

When i say good antenna, i mean like a 102-or-whatever" whip. Most people think they look kind of silly. I have one on my car on the bumper with spring and quick release, a ground wire from the bumper to the car body, and a 200 watt linear (which has a built-in receive amp). i can get two way communication from 60 miles away on channel 19. ;)

I used to have a female co-driver and we'd hear some funny #### on the CB sometimes like if she was backing it in or something.. "Keep comin back honey!" "you're almost there sexy!" etc etc. We'd laugh our butts off at this crap. Most truckers weren't disrespectful to her, but they ...liked her. :)

if you key up with 200 watts you'll get more responses to a radio check.

It wasn't my intention to turn you off CB's entirely. I keep one in my car for long trips to find out what's going on down the road, and to shoot the breeze with the drivers. Despite some of the bad press, most truckers and former truckers are actually really nice people out there doing a job they love. And you never know who you might meet out there. I just think a good cell phone with a good service provider would be a much safer option in case of emergency.
