I think it may be, but then anything about "hard drive" runs long because of all the advertisements.

Either the waveform produced by your radio is identical at every frequency within the audio spectrum to the waveform produced by your signal generator or it isn't. If you're testing a dual final radio right out of the box with a factory tune, it won't be and it won't matter what microphone you plug into that radio until you fix the linearity problems. Naturally, it's impossible for you to fix those problems without replacing the mismatched transistors. Once those problems are fixed then 90% of every microphone you plug into the radio will sound fine and only then will you be in a position to blame a microphone for creating a problem. -
What I am trying to do is probe this issue from your point of view.
I can see a clean waveform being reproduced through the audio chain, right up to the RF stage but then what?

It isn't important because we are not talking about purity issues in a signal that depends on it to meet standards in order to maintain licensing. This isn't AM broadcast systems, it is CB radio and even ham radios have problems with the signal that isn't important, go listen to some of the Hi-Fi AM people, you can detect even with all the processing equipment they have issues with distortion. I forgot the guy's call, one runs a class E transmitter of 250 watts and has a high-end processing audio setup, and STILL sounds like crap.
There is another running a Collins 20-V3 that I used to own, he is using my old RCA BK-10a mic and my old Collins board, he sounds great, but then it is a broadcast transmitter that is set up right, and sounds perfect. while the BX-10a is a very good mic, if he used my 77DK mic, as we used to say, we would hear a cat crapping behind the garage two blocks away.
