It looks like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is going flat out to get the Mexican truck program run through Congress.
I just got this email from OOIDA:

I would think that a group to save american jobs would be trying to repeal NAFTA, not make crap programs in it stronger.

The facts don't back up your opinion about NAFTA.

Mooney, What do you mean? NAFTA is going to allow Mexicans to work and drive in the US. They make about 15 cents/mi and no insurance or anything else. The second thing thats going to happen is every other company (1st is Celadon has already hired 90% Mexicans) inclucing Hunt and Schneider and pay them 15 cents. Will it or will it not lower the standard of living in the US? All the companies that have moved there already will ship their own product and Permits, taxes and fuel are all cheaper in MX. I lived in Yuma AZ and went over the border all the time and let me tell you it was a dangerous place to drive. Mexican drivers are long on crazy. A 2 lane with center turn means pass as fast as you can and every cop is out for a bribe.
Canada Dry, gearjammer-2000 and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
Passin Thru...Very well put. If we (U.S.A.) start allowing Mexican truck's&driver's past their current 20-25 mile limit (now imposed) will mean the end of wage's as we now get.It will take time but our wage's will be cut.simplyred1962 Thanks this.

First of all, NAFTA is more than a few Mexican trucks. All data suggests it
has been a positive for American business.
Secondly, your 15 cent a mile pay for Mexican drivers is total bunk.
Mexican drivers a paid by a variety of methods, salary, percentage and per
mile.
Blocking the Cross Border Trucking Program is costing America at least
$400 million a year.
For 98 Mexican trucks. -
"House Panel Chairman Seeks to Drop NAFTA Cross-Border Trucking Provision" is the title of an article written by Sean McNally in Transport Topics 3/15/10, page 25.
The article states that Rep. Peter DeFazio seeks to renegotiate NAFTA and drop the cross-border trucking provision as the easiest way to eliminate the retaliatory tariffs. He does not believe Congress will reverse course and open the border under threat of these excessive, arbitrary and political tariffs.
In DeFazio's opinion, NAFTA does not "bind the U.S. to accept subpar safety standards, and Congress is not going to waive our rights under NAFTA." Besides the safety concerns, DeFazio states "the low wages of Mexican drivers will drive U.S. trucking companies out of business."
