Sounds like you quit the "auto trans" carrier, then did the prehire with another carrier. Is that correct?

HEHE.. go back to US express :) .. JK.. I have always said.. auto's might be fine. till you want to drive a real truck.. then you have no idea how to shift..I really have no advice.. maybe try to find a OO an get him to take you out.. or see if the school will give you a refresher course on shfting.

I will go for a week, or two if necessary, free of charge! I am that dedicated and willing to learn! In return you will retest me when am done....if I pass great, if I don't you got 1 or 2 weeks of free labour....

You live in a good freight area where many will hire you. Why don't you try a different company?

go buy a streight shift car/pickup and train yourself.all shift patterns are the same -H
then start off in 1st,thru 5.pull up the splitter, and start over.use the 5mph incurments on big trucks.there should be a diagram on the dash
or sun visor, showing u the pattern

You've got to relax. You know when the truck is going to shift from your other truck. Try to do the same but do it with less tension. When the engine and road speed are right the shifter will fall into place. If you miss the gear don't try to shove the shifter into that gear, just relax and go to the next lower gear. Don't over rev the engine and make the shift.

The way it sounds the company you went on the pre-hire is willing to give you a shot when they say all you need is practice so what's the deal there? Did they say come back when you have experience or did they say they will look at you? If they are willing to hire you then don't worry because you'll get the training you need. If not then you have some good suggestions here on what to do.

Years ago Cummins put out a booklet about progressive shifting when they introduced the new formula engines and they say to shift like this. Pick the lowest gear that will move the truck without applying any power. Run it up to 1250rpm and shift, run it up to 1300rpm and shift, run it up to 1350 and shift, run it up to 1400 and shift, run it up to 1450 and shift and so on. That's with a 10 speed and a 1900 rpm engine. You can adapt to other engines very easily just by increasing the rpm just a little with every shift. You don't want to run the engine up against the peg (the governor) and shift but you can run it up to about 100 rpm below the peg and shift. Of course up shifting is easy. Downshifting you'll have to really match the road speed with the engine. But again relax and if you miss the gear don't keep trying to make that hole and go to the next one lower. You'll get it over time and you'll know how to shift progressively, skip gears, and know what gear you'll need to be in for all speeds.
