It's a so called black box for trucks. My guess would be that it records speed, miles driven, time driving. Then your logs had better match the recording.

that would be correct. but it also can record driving habits amngst some other things. it's hard to find all the info about though since companies are pretty hush-hush about it.

We have a GPS tracker in our truck, fairly non intrusive as its fairly small and out of the way, but does track speed, location, stops, starts, engine cut offs and checks for us being out of route or idle too long. Sends an email to the big wheels blackberries when it tracks something "Out of place".

Can be useful but just something else they spend money on while they could have gave us a raise lol

Engine computers track operation of the truck including speed, braking, throttle position, idling, and more. Most of my driving had been with Cummins Celect and Celect plus, but lately I have been driving 60 Series Detroits with DDEC II, III, IV, and V.

The trucks I have driven lately also have Peoplenet, it's like Qualcom, it has GPS, and ties directly to the engine computer, it doesn't always work, for instance it takes a couple of hours to send a message from the truck before the net sends it. There is a failure rate of units not working, but the engine computer has to work or the engine won't run.

These are just the latest in a series of checks and balances for drivers. They do tattle-tale your driving habits but, they also can be used to prove you weren't the guy who backed into someones trailer in a parking lot last Tuesday. There are going to be more and more "Black Boxes" in the Government's fight to control driving hours and speed. The people are up in arms whenever a truck is at fault in a fatality. I know records show that it's by far the car drivers who are at fault but that won't stop the screaming for harsher enforcements. The days of the "Outllaw Truckers" is about over. There just isn't enough profit being made for the Companies to look the other way anymore. Everyday on my local news channel there are a group of Lawyers advertising for "Victim's" of truck wrecks. There is a large photo of a Werner truck sitting on top of a small car the whole time this advertisement is showing. There is just too any ways to find your true driving time to try and fudge anymore.
