I don't have an opinion and don't think if ALL CDL drivers shared the same opinion it would influence the DOT/FMCSA. Until the rule is finalized a good guess & a bad guess are still just guesses. If we knew the answers before the final rule was issued what would anyone be able to do versus learning the final rule 30 days before it goes into effect?AsphaltFarmer Thanks this.

When all this "driverless" vehicle stuff started to come out & there were early discussions here, I remember members saying they would have to have a person in the vehicle for things like fuel, opening trailer doors, tarping etc.
They cant assist in DOT inspections??? Hog wash!!
They can do that as well as off site or roadside inspections & moving the vehicle in case of OOS.Numb, tscottme and AsphaltFarmer Thank this. -
Guys, the way the system is working on the trucks I've seen and ridden in, the telemetrics are available to the states so they can see axle weights, performance data, and as mentioned to me, the onboard cameras live. They won't be pulling these things over, they won't do road side inspections and they won't need to scale because everything is already available.

I remember Dave Nemo doing his show from a Tennessee scale forever ago and he was all high praising everything that could be seen just driving down the road like they could see if your brakes were out of adjustment at speed and such.AsphaltFarmer Thanks this.

That's a lot of stuff to be downloading and analyzing as the truck rolls by in 2 seconds.
Brakes out of adjustment.
How is that determined? Lazer temps? -
I can imagine joint inspections at participating 3rd party vendors with govt agencies as well as monitoring of 3rd party inspectors with a system similar to a Safer score.
Monitoring and transferring data is capable at this point but maybe a larger problem similar to eld and hos hacking that is an issue today but more on the scale of Volkswagen's emissions scandal a few years back should be a concern.snowwy Thanks this. -
I'd like to know what type of testing has been done in black ice conditions.
Oh, and how connectivity be maintained while the trucks go through tunnels? -
Just browsing I see several references to "Convolutional Nueral Network" and it seems to be a network of sensors embedded in the road, optical sensors and infrared thermometers in the vehicle. They work together and tests in 2020 claim 96% accuracy.
For connectivity in tunnels I saw several articles with publication dates over the last few years regarding cellular service being installed in many subway systems such as NY and London.
