I have just put a new 3406e cat long block in a 1997 379 pete I replaced everything on the engine with new parts including the turbo. I just cranked it for the first time it started fine oil pressure came right up but when I walked around to the turbo I had black oil running into the exhaust out of turbo. I took everything apart and have clean oil going into and out of turbo into the return line and no oil going into charge air cooler. Does anyone have any ideas.

Could this "Oil" be fuel with soot washed from the exhaust?AModelCat Thanks this.

Very common with new CAT parts.
Oil by the rings because they aren’t seated yet.
Put a load on in and do some good pulls. It will clear up after the first day.Last edited: Sep 9, 2023

I went out and cranked it again with exhaust elbow off the turbo the oil is still building up and running out. Do I just need to run It like you said and the oil will clear itself. It looks like it would coat everything with oil. Thanks for your information

Yup. I in-framed a 6NZ some time ago. Dripping out of the flex pipe at hot idle.
Make sure everything else is buttoned up and go pull some hills. When the boost builds it will not leak and will seat the rings.
You can pay someone to break it in on the dyno too.Last edited: Sep 9, 2023

They take a little work to get broke in right, load it up nice and heavy and pull some hills as soon as you can. Drive it like normal, don't baby it.
