Hello. 1st post here. I am unemployed in UT and want to find a company willing to train a noob to get his CDL and put him to work. I have heard about CRE and it's reputation, but they do offer training with little upfront money. Weighing my options, with no money for training, should I commit, or are there other carriers that are willing to train. Checked with Watkins/Shep, they no longer provide training as of 11/2009.(website should be updated to reflect that). Here is my situation: Unemployed, no wife. Losing my house, and cars will be repo'ed in the coming weeks/months. Don't care about home time, just want to work and provide for my 2 kids. If not England, then who? Sorry if this has been posted before, with the economy the way it is, I'm sure I am not the1st (or the last) to have these questions... Thanks for your advise!

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Which OTR still offers CDL training?

There may be some education assistance or job placement service in your state/county/city that might provide for you to go to a truck driving school - I didn't personally do this but a lot of the students at my school got in this way. I wouldn't know where to point you but you could look into something like that?
-
Have you considered a community college? In my area the schools are around $6,000 but the community college is only $3,000. Much better education at the college and their isnt a commitment to drive for any one trucking company. You may also qualify for some type of a grant or assistance.

Thanks. I will check with my local unemployment office on Mon. (they are closed today) to see what they offer in assistance. If I go this route, it does open more opportunities, as I won't be commited to working off my training with a carrier that may or may not have my best interests in mind. This is a good option. But my question still remains: Any other Carriers that will front the CDL training in exchange for a job? Thanks again.

Did you consider Swift, sure beats CRE.

TMC,Werner,Prime are a few.

Werner will only reimburse the training. They will not provide it. Not positive but I think the same holds true with TMC.

"To get your career in trucking rolling, a Swift Driving Academy is the place to start. Tuition for the comprehensive course is $3,900. Swift will reimburse you for the total cost of the course over the period of 26 consecutive months of employment with Swift."

Thanks all for the insight. Swift will reimburse, but I have to pay up front. If I can't swing a loan for tuition from unemployment, I'm gonna have to figure out something. Anyone need a kidney?

Thanks for mentioning Prime. From what I read on the forums here, they tend to give a noob an honest chance to succeed. I'll put CRE in my rearview, and see what Prime and I can work out. Thanks again
