My info is from a couple of years ago but their trucks have automatic transmissions, they hire recent grads and they paid totally new drivers twenty-nine cents per mile with raises every 3 months. Looking back on my experience I would have to say I was (overall) treated fairly. There are many worse companies out there. I classify it as an acceptable place to get your first year of driving in and then see if you find a higher paying or otherwise more suitable driving job.

Please note however that my experience was with a company that was a smaller company that was part of PAM. We had our own separate driver managers but my truck was a PAM truck, I pulled PAM trailers and all of the paperwork was

PAM. One of the things that leaves me with a good memory is that they didn't bang up my DAC report when they easily could have.

I was also paid all money owed me and overall it I didn't feel as if I was ripped off after I left.

If you are looking for a entry level driving job with a big company, they are fine. When I was there I just accepted loads and drove and drove and was so busy I barely had time to take a shower.

It was only when I found myself in the driver's lounge of the terminals did I hear complaints and problems such as break-downs, family problems, etc. But, of course, that is to be expected: if the driver didn't have a problem, he wouldn't be sitting in the terminal in the first place (except for routine maintenance or whatever). It should be noted this situation (drivers who are complaining in the lounge) is not specific to PAM but most every company, I would think.

So,you want info on Penny A Mile eh?I've been with them for almost two years now and am waiting for vacation to kick in.And when vaca.pay clears I will be turning in a two weeks notice unless I find employment with another company first.I made a whopping 22.K last year, swallowed a 5% pay cut, been left sitting for sometimes day's waiting for loads, cheated out of miles, given impossible delivery times for legal driving hours and blah,blah,blah......I do however have a good dispatcher but she is just a messenger for the company really. Here is an example load assignment.
    Pick up load 08:00,01/03/10
    Deliver load 16:00, 01/06/10
    Request early del.Denied.
    paid miles...365
    Total actual miles driven.....420
    Now I do have a 100% on time pickup/del rate,no tickets,no accidents,play by the rules,never complain and moan and all I get is a lousy 22K.
Not worth the everyday risk and gargantuan amount of BS you have to put up with with Penny A Mile.Apply at PAM at your own risk.

Anybody else? I'm vaguely considering applying next year, if other plans don't work out. I know where their eastern OH yard is, and it's nice and close to the house.

I'm basically the same as Indytruck. I've done my time for 2 years and made almost 23k. I'm also about to grab my vacation pay and split.

Despite all that I don't regret going with PAM as an entry level. It sounds crappy but the whole economy is abysmal. At the time 2 years ago it gave me employment with free training so I took it.

I also don't feel like they tried to screw me out of pay. However I do also think some of their dispatches were hard to pull off. Like pick up at noon in Fort Smith and deliver tomorrow morning 6am near San Antonio. I also really hated the Lansing, MI to Springhill, TN same day pickup and delivery. Maybe trips like this seem okay on Mapquest but not when I have to hit Louisville rushhour halfway.

I'd say I'm not just tired of PAM but trucking in general. The long drives with short notices leave me burned out and bored out of my mind.
