I can't find anything on this after several different searches. #1 How do the ice road drivers get away without having to abide by HOS rules? They are always talking about straight drive times way over any Hos rule. #2 What is the purpose of the white stripes I sometimes see usually on the side of the trailer tires but sometimes on the drive wheels also? I don't necessarily mean just on the ice road equipment; I see them in the continental 48 also. Thanks

i think the white strip is so they know where the valve stem is on the tire when the tire is covered in snow and ice.

I don't know about ice road guys but in California (intra-state) there is an HOS exception for harvest trucks. Basically you can drive 12 hours a day 7 days straight then start a new cycle with no reset, during the harvest only. Because the harvests are extremely time sensitive.
So maybe there is something similar for them?

I believe Ice roads in canada are exempt from hos or have extended hos , cause if you stop on the ice for any length of time the viberation will cause you to sink,
Perhaps Wildcat will answer with facts about hos -
I think the white strips are to make sure the wheels are going around in cold tempratures. You can see the stripes at a slow speed, where you ucannot always see the wheels turning. -
yep thats right. I have the same stripe on my triaxle step deck. Its almost impossible to see if they are turning without it

There is a dynamic spin balance system that you paint a stripe on the tire and use a strobe light to position the weights.

The newer iceroad truckers shows are in alaska, and all truckers in alaska get an exemption anyway. They get 15 drive hours that have to be driven within 20 hours of coming on duty (instead of 11 and 14). They also drive a lot faster on those roads. I dont know if they're doing more than that or not.

private road, not highway, don't need a log book on private property just a guess

The white stripe is to see that your tires are turning, not skidding when the brakes are frozen down...plain and simple!mizdageeragn Thanks this.
