Realistic gross as a o/o

It is the exception, not the rule! It did briefly cause me to think about $$$$$ instead of home time. I chose the home time and a reasonable living with 4 years left on a contract.

 

Hey Banker , i am trying to get my feet in car hauling maybe in few months .i have 7 years dry van experience and currently an 0/0 but not making the money i want .so i am thinking of making the jump to car hauling so i guess my question to you is :what is your advice to someone like me ? Any tips or decent companies with good training and good pay?

You aren’t far from the truth although it is a temporary retirement. We have definitely been enjoying what looks like the last bit of this unseasonably warm fall weather. Someone has to supervise my Frenchies that enjoy water and chasing a ball more than my Labrador Retrievers did.

 

If you really want to haul cars I suggest you go with a company that has company drivers as well as owner ops and also will train you. Where you live will likely dictate which company you need to choose. The part of my advice that you may not like is that I strongly suggest you learn the trade as a company driver first. Carhauling is absolutely not for every truck driver and it would suck to own a carhauler and not like hauling cars. You won’t know you like it until you are several months into it possibly a year or so. Most of the Carhaul companies won’t let you become one of their owner ops unless you are experienced and this is more important than some people realize. Many people fail to realize that while learning this trade you will make mistakes. How many mistakes you make and how much those mistakes cost is tied to the level of the training you receive.
I am familiar with several companies and they have good training. They have some really good freight/pay and they have some really bad freight. Geographic location and/or shipper has some to do with the pay in my experience. Fortunately as new car contracts have renewed the rates have gone up as the manufacturers realize that good car haulers don’t work cheap.

 

Thank you sir for your reply ..yes i am thinking of going with a company first .that is why i am careful choosing one that provides a solid training .i am 41 years old and i am starting to find myself catching my breath at times and putting on some weight lol so i need a change .i need more money and i need some work out .probably car hauling would provide that ..i dunno .i guess we will find out lol .I live in bowling green,KY .so i think maybe being close to corvette and the GM in spring hill ,TN is a good thing .
My wife and i would eventually like to move to Orlando,FL but i dunno if that is a good idea if am gonna go car hauling .cuz when i used to take loads down there pulling a dry van i am always deadheading to GA to pickup something cheap .

I possibly would wait until the UAW strike is over to make the move, but I would definitely apply now if you really want to do this. Seniority is EVERYTHING in a Union Job and sometimes one spot in seniority makes a world of difference. If you were offered the job before the strike is over you would have to evaluate your personal finances and also evaluate the possibility of being laid off if the UAW decides to strike the Corvette plant before they settle the strike. With you living in Bowling Green you won’t do any better in my opinion than going to work for Jack Cooper hauling Corvettes from Bowling Green. The training you will receive will be the best available anywhere and while training you will make roughly $30 an hour. It’s also a Teamster job and your family health insurance will be free, it is some of the best insurance available anywhere. The pay is very good and you receive a pension paid by the company at zero cost to you. I started with Jack Cooper and it is an excellent company. The variety of vehicles you will backhaul will provide you valuable experience. Several of my friends hauled Corvettes from Bowling Green and they are now successful owner operators. The only downside I see with Bowling Green is they deliver 48 states and Canada. When taking the long runs you will be subject to being gone up to 2 weeks at a time until you gain seniority. You will be working for the crown jewel terminal of the company and that experience will be priceless for the day if you decide to become an owner operator somewhere else. Currently Jack Cooper doesn’t have owner operators, but they own North American Auto Transport and Moore Transport and they use owner operators at both companies. If you absolutely couldn’t handle being gone up to 2 weeks then I can give you some other options.
If I lived in Bowling Green, knowing what I do and if I were looking to get in the industry it would be with Jack Cooper Bowling Green Ky.

I like everything u mentioned abt Jack cooper with the exception of being out and away from my family for two weeks at a time .It would be hard .Maybe once in a while but i have never done it .i would love something that probably would get me home every other day or every week at least .i hate to just go thru training with Jack cooper and leave once training is over because of the home time aspect . i try to stay in good terms with the companies i work for .any other company you may suggest that can get me some good training ,pay and hometime .thanks again
