Go with Stevens if you got a pre-hire.
Here is what I know about them..
Clean equipment not tore up like Prime Inc crap.
Their training is excellent..from what I’ve heard and they don’t look like clowns on the road like Prime Inc.
In my 7 years OTR I’ve never had one single issue with a Stevens driver. Granted their trucks are slow but that’s life at the big companies.
Met one of their trainers with 3 students in Terrel, TX and the students had some nice Stevens gear on..hats, shirts etc.
Just ignore the sniveling reviews..probably crybabies that couldn’t deal with the reality of trucking.
You’re not going to have many decent opportunities out of Florida so I’d definitely jump on the Stevens offer..at minimum you’ll get good training. -
Do not decide about any CDL school until you find the job you will do afterwards. You wouldn't pick which job to work for based how convenient the parking spot is positioned to the front door, would you? CDL school is a formality so you can pass the state exam and nothing more.
Some employers have their own schools or only hire from certain schools. Half of trucking companies that hire newbies pay Tuition Reimbursement TR. The school may be free, free in exchange for 12 months of working for a company, or you take out a loan and you repay over time and your employer pays you some or all of your tuition, if you have an active loan. Nobody reimburses you for paying the CDL school without a loan.
25-30% of trucking companies may allow pets, with conditions & size or breed restrictions.
Living in FL you limit the employers that CAN hire you. FL is a freight desert. They produce very little outbound freight and many companies just skip FL.
Get all endorsements even if you don't think you want them at your first job, especially Doubles/Triples, Tanker. Some of the best jobs require those to get hired. Tanker is required for certain freight loaded into or onto other trailers, not just for tanker trailers.
You likely can't bring your pet with you for the first 1-8 weeks at your first job when you ride with a trainer. A few companies won't allows pets until you complete 90 days of solo driving with zero accidents & incidents.
Find the job, then decide about school. You need to zero in on how often you need to be home, where & what freight you haul, how much money you need, and many other things. Web sites & recruiters often are not telling the truth about what YOU will experience. They usually average their best driver's pay & miles and then ewbies think that is the minimum they will get every week. You get paid based on miles driven. If you don't drive much, you don't get paid much. Dispatchers & customers can waste a lot of your time which reduces the pay you can make.
80-90% of new drivers quit the industry quickly because they do little research, work for a company that doesn't match what they need, and new drivers are not very careful so the get fired after accidents & incidents from not paying attention, poor skills, or being in a hurry.
Trucking can turn your life around, it did mine. But only if you approach it responsibly and think before to act. Touching your phone while driving can get you fired. I'm not kidding and you don't have to agree with it to get fired or a big ticket for you and a huge ticket for your company.
Look before you leap.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this. -
