or get 10 years in first. Learn the brokers, learn how to fix trucks and trailers, know what areas at what time of the year to run in

Hey rob just a little update: This was my best week ever with KLLM

KLLM pays .88cpm loaded and empty plus fsc presently # 31cpm loaded, that equates to 1.19/loaded mile. With a reefer my dh is very little. I'd estimate below 10%. We do a fair amount of drop and hook. That allows me to get more miles in for the week. Haz-mat loads also adds to the bottom line along with stop pay. I/we dont do a lot of sitting and waiting for loads. Once you establish yourslf as a runner and stay out of the truck stop you can get a lot of long haul runs.

For ex. I got a run from darien, Wi to Antioch, Ca. 2433 loaded miles w/ 80 miles dh, ran that load in 3.5 days (haz mat Georgia Pacific). Then got another load 60 miles dh to Elk Grove, Ca. going to Moblie Alabama. A little over 2300 loaded miles (5 days delivery time did it in four) Picked up first load one day before payperiod ended (So some carry over for previous week). On both load, ran 700 plus miles per day.
    Load #1
    2433 + 80 = 2513miles #.88cpm = 2211.44
    FSC 754.23
    2211.44 + 754.23 = 2965.67 pay for load.
    spent 1200.00 for fuel approx
    2965.67 - 1200.00 = 1765.67

    Load #2
    60miles dh + 2300 loaded miles = 2360 # .88cpm = 2076.80
    FSC $713.00
    2076.80 + 713.00 = $2789.00
spent approx the same for fuel 1200.00
    2076.80 + 713.00 = 2789.80 - 1200.00 for fuel = 1589.80

add the two loads for the week and you get $3355.47

    - $177.00/wk base plate and tags
    - fuel tax approx .01cpm

Granted everyweek is not this great but at least in my situation most are. Stay out of the truck stops, and communicate with your travel agent and shippers and receivers. ie pick up early when possible and deliver early when possible. Put in a good days driving. Ask for preplan, when you get close to your drop point. Communication is the key. And an occasional fruit basket or something like that to your travel agent dosen't hurt either. In this business if your a runner and know how to work your log book, and don't let your log book work you, things can be good.

Since your posting in the owner op section I take it you have your own rig. My question is do you have a truck payment and insurance that you have to pay for? Do you eat and pay tolls while on the road ?

Your miles for the week come to 4873 for which you were paid $3355.00 rounded. Divide 3355 by 4873 and it comes to .69 cpm rounded.
Now if you have a truck payment, trailer lease. tolls, insurance, and food to pay for I would guess your driving for about .25 cpm.
You would do better to find a smaller company that pays better..
My brother inlaw averages 1.48 cpm with no truck or trailer payment.
My point is you can do better, just look around at some smaller companies.

I am looking for a smaller company, but I had to start somewhere. (1)That was actually for 8 days, I started the first trip 1 day into the previous work week. (2) No I do not have a truck payment, paid cash for the truck. (3) KLLM takes cares of all tolls, reefer fuel, and I pull their trailer (4) Ins and base plate cost me $177.00/wk (5) my numbers reflect after fuel cost, the only thing I left out was fuel tax which is approx. .01cpm depending on where I fueled. Aafter road tax and ins i cleared just under 3000 dollars that week. That was my best week, I usually clear between 1600 and 2200 dollars/wk. Usually a good week followed by a better week then another good week. Then I go home for a week of down time. I run three weeks and take off a week. Typically after 4 to 5 days im ready to get back on the road.

Also, I frequent wally world once a week for groceries, but on occasion I do enjoy a good steak dinner, I also find it hard to past up those pork chop sandwiches in Hammond, La at the Petro I-12 exit 40, and soul man BBQ in Texas. No buffet in the truck stop, I think its a waste of money. Mainly 'cause I cant eat 12 dollars worth of food in one sitting(14 dollars if you dont drink water)
