I have a 3406B with serial # 3ZJ03413. Found service manuals for it but can't find a parts manual. Would a parts manual for a 4MG give me mostly the same info for my engine?

That 3zj serial number shows it has the larger rod journals, so the 4mg (which has the smaller rod journals) parts manual won't be close enough that I would recommend using it for part numbers.
It would give you a good idea on identifying parts and knowing what your looking.
I'm sure there are other differences, Others here are more knowledgeable on these older mechanicals than me though.elliott Thanks this. -
Good points. I may try to find a C model parts manual since some of them start with the same prefix as my B. Might get me a little closer.

You really need a serial number correct manual. For instance there are 3 different pump cams for the 3ZJ. An 11 a 10.4 and 9.5. All use different helix on the timing advance. A 3ZJ will be dual scroll pump or a C pump regardless if it’s a B serial number or not. Mix matching parts can go well or incredibly sour. Knowing what’s been mis matched on a 30 year old motor that should be a beast but is a slug…..can be trouble.

I'll go to my local Cat dealer and see if they'll give me a parts manual for my serial number. Not sure if they'll have a physical copy sitting on the shelf, but at least it'll be good to talk to them about things I need. Also, from the looks of it and what the previous owner told me, I'm pretty sure nothing has been done to this engine since it was dropped in the truck in '92, so that's good news as far as not having mismatched parts. It is in really bad shape though.
