Most vapes use Lithium Ion batteries, which were traditionally used in durable items like laptops, phones, and power tools. Disposable vapes are one of the very few commonly used items that use Li-ion batteries that are disposable. So there's a lot of these being tossed. Plus, most people will recycle old computers and phones, but don't consider the vapes.

Biggest issue is that they like to catch fire when shorted, or crushed. Which is not unlikely in the compactor of a garbage truck.

The easier solution is to end the disposable vape craze altogether. After banning fruity/sweet flavors in 'pod based' systems, the only thing it did was cause this uprising of, mostly, imported and questionable disposable vapes. In an effort to reduce underage vaping, all they did was allow other countries to profit off underage vaping and increase battery disposal. The Vuse and Juul are great options, and most former smokers don't mind the less exciting menthol flavor they offer. Most younger users want the fruity and sweet flavors, so give US based, pod device manufacturers the ability to produce these flavors again. Big tobacco already lost the fight against vapes anyways.

The majority of these disposable vapes are just ending up in the general trash anyways. 99.9% aren't thinking 'wow, I should hold onto this vape I replace daily and dispose of it properly'.
