That's why whenever I go on long trips I always bring my CB with me....it helped me sorta get out of a traffic jam once and has kept me up to date on other traffic conditions, where the LEO's are at, etc....also when I'm bored I can sometimes strike up a good convo.
Why a cb?

Heck yeah, I was working one day and started heading north on I-65. Got a call from the office and had to turn around but the next exit was a long way away. I came up on stand still traffic and asked if there were any cuts through the median. A guy came back and told, so about a mile later I was able to turn around and head back. They come in handy.

Be careful. In a several states, cop cars are equipped with CB radios, and in a few, its the big obvious 9 footer....anyhow, a few of these cops actually use them.....whats keeping them from getting on, hey driver, i dont see any cops....while they're running a speed trap..

Point taken phroziac. I usually bid dog channel 19 while on the interstates. Usually I can pick up a truck driver up the road with a speed trap warning going out over the air several miles in advance. It's humerus to watch people whiz by me and then see their brake lights come on at the last second because they thought they were too good for that "old technology them truckers keep using".
Also IIRC I believe there's but only a small handful of LEO's with CB's in their cars these days. I know not long ago one police dept (in Texas i believe it was) was selling all the Uniden 510's out of their cars because they quit monitoring the CB.squirrellsgnwild Thanks this. -
Or if you really wanna be cool get a Galaxy 929 or 979. They rock! The built in SWR meter works and it has adjustable output power, and a fully adjustable dimmer switch, and the Starlight faceplace is very pretty. The meter is much larger than a Cobra, so it's easier to read. You get better live on-air action from people on the road than you can from other traffic reports. And you can always get other current info.

I remember pretty vividly when I bought my cobra 29 at a flying J i saw a cobra 25 at the same or very slightly HIGHER price.
When I get to a real truck stop for more than 10 seconds later today, I will check what features the 25 does NOT have and post back here. I remember there is definitely something i want it doesnt have.
Also cobra 29 has more room inside if you want any add-on boards, and it actually has places inside it to put them in properly.
Delta tune is nice when you're working skip.
Why not just tell him to get a dang cobra 19? Available at big lots for $20. you can't beat that price. It has a ton of things it doesnt have though. -
Oh..ok. I don't buy my CB stuff from truck stops unless it's cheap stuff like power cords or brackets. All of their radios are overpriced and done so for a reason....since the average "truck stop radio buyer" is the OTR trucker who's radio just blew up on him in the middle of a long haul.
I've looked into the Cobra 29, and while it's a good radio it just doesn't have any features that I'd consider useful to me. The Cobra 25 has everything I'll ever need that the Cobra 29 has but they are also smaller chassied for easier install. If I need an SWR check I have my trusty meter. If I need SSB I'll look into a Cobra 148 Taiwan or Philly model or a Uniden Grant.
I do agree the Cobra 29 has a bigger space for echo boards and roger beep boards (if so desired) but then if I were going that territory I'd just opt for an export radio with all that done plus more power right out of the box...not peaked and tuned....for about the same, if not less than it would run me to have Bubba's hackjob CB shop do the work, and maybe remove my modulation limiters in the process so I can sound like #### like half of the driver's radio's out there.
But that's just me.
And I don't see how a delta tune knob works on an AM only radio....can someone please enlighten me? I know how it works on a SSB radio.
As for the Cobra 19, I'd never recommend one of those to anyone except maybe if it were the old 1979 model 19 GTL like I had which looked like a mini Cobra 25 and worked better than any Cobra 19 that's been built since the mid 80's. -
I carry a CB radio and 2 meter radio when out on the road also have a 10 meter fm only one too ...
-
I don't leave without it, I won't travel without one,It's not so much for the speeding anymore, it's to hear where they (police) are sitting. Also good for traffic update's or in general conversation if you get bored.
