UPS reduces pilot head count by nearly 200 with buyouts
Trucking isn’t the only ones feeling the crunch. The air cargo side is feeling it too. Both UPS and FedEx have offered their pilots opt-out packages while at the same time American Airlines is offering them a chance to fly with their American Eagle subsidiaries.

That’s like going from driving a big rig to Uber for us lol. No thanks I’ll take the buyout.

That’s crazy. Didn’t know it was this bad.
Those pilots make a very healthy amount of money. I tried to steer my young neighbor towards that career.Bud A., Flat Earth Trucker, mjd4277 and 2 others Thank this. -
A friend of ours flies a Cessna Caravan that's leased out to Fed Ex. He runs hub and spoke and usually does pretty well. Usually.
This year he's down to about three nights a week, layovers everywhere where they used to come home every morning after the last hub drop. He carries a sleeping bag now. And extra clothes. He doesn't get paid for layovers.
He said he'd quit if there was anything else besides Amateur Hour Airways (Insert third level carrier here) and instructing open to him. All he's ever done is ag work and the freight dog hustle. Ag work around here isn't great and he doesn't want to follow the crops anyway.
Like he said "I have over ten thousand hours in Beech 18s. That and a dollar bill will get you a cup of coffee."
His wife has a good job teaching nursing at the local university. That's all that's keeping them afloat.
It ain't just truckers that are feeling the pinch.Moon_beam, Bud A., Flat Earth Trucker and 4 others Thank this. -
As you can see the air cargo sector has overcapacity in the market. As well as giving pilots the opt-out package both UPS and FedEx will phasing out older aircraft in their respective fleets,in particular the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. The last of those trijets was built in 2001,which means the youngest example is pushing 22 years of age. Both companies have the world’s largest fleet of them between them. While state of the art at the time,it’s now considered a “gas guzzler”,as they’ve been replaced mostly by Boeing 777 freighters or Airbus A330 freighters (new and used).

Regional airlines are now paying starting FOs at around 100k

Can you tell us which ones or maybe quote a source? The last I heard most of the regionals were still paying slave wages. I'd sure like to be wrong about that.

I’ll let you gentlemen do the math on this one.
