If FedEx were to relocate to another location, Memphis would dry up and blow away.

And more than likely the airport with it. Some of the railroads would be able to take up some of the slack.

Graceland wasn't surrounded by the ghetto when it was built. I was disappointed they weren't selling fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches at the Cafe

Do not recall when it was built but past there quite a bit in 1956/57. Going to St Louis empty. we would leave US78, cut across on Shelby drive all the way to US51 and run it back up into town to catch the then only bridge. This avoided the heavy congestion up in where Lamar turned into Crump Blvd. 51 was pretty sparse then. The land across from Graceland was vacant farm or pasture. Southland Mall had not been built then.
Coming back we hit it right on down Crump and Lamar as was always around 1 to 2 AM. Have run 3 abreast on 4 lane Crump, just getting on thru...
    Reason for go/come change...
Where Shelby ended into 51, Shelby was about 5' higher than 51. You had to swing into the left lane of Shelby and angle across in to 51 or you landing gear would drag and it was quite a twist and ease down. Double deck of hogs coming back kind of precluded that. This was 2 lane county grade then.

We figured get off the chute in E. St Louis by 4 PM, make the 4 AM kill start in at Bryan Bros in West Point. If you weren't, you called, they counted what they had in the pens, then started killing as you came. JIT supply even back then... Old roads (480 miles) old gas trucks, a serious 12 hours.
