When one resigns from a trucking company, do they typically cut you loose right away or do they ask you to work out a couple of weeks notice?

Depends...

With the way you were treated, and vice versa...a 2 week notice may last 2 weeks !!!!

Thanks jtrnr, I was offered, and I accepted, the position here in JAX but I don't start for a few weeks. It was clearly one I couldn't refuse. I just want to do it right...no burned bridges. I was hoping to make it to the 6 month point but I can't with this position.

I appreciate all of your support from the beginning.

When I quit wse I just ask to get to elm springs so i could quit.I put it on the Q/c.Make sure You turn in your truck and have Martha check you in.Also find out from dispatch what they will put on your dac.This way you may want to come back out and drive again.Good luck 94nole with your new job...p/s best way to get home rent car from avis rental they are at northwest reg. airport,taxi from elm is about $25....

Thanks trunch. I'll miss the freedom that the business provides. I won't miss the overnight trips or the winter weather driving (although that should almost be over for another 9 months or so).

I think they are going to have me grab a load somewhere close by and head to the ATL terminal with it. The JAX terminal is a CCC terminal and not really WSE although they let us park there.

I'll then grab a rental car and head up to VA for a couple of days to visit my folks.

I appreciate all the support and the incredible resource that this forum truly is.

Yes, WSE does pay a portion in the form of a per diem based on a rate per mile. It is kind of stupid to call it "PER DIEM" when it is based on miles.

Per Diem is a "per day" amount, not based on miles or anything other than where you are. There is a ME&I rate (which is used here for transportation workers subject to HOS regs) that is now $59/day, up from $52. The IRS allows one to use 80% of that amount regardless of where you are. You can keep track of each locality, as the rate in some places is higher, however, it can be a bit of bear to keep up with all that.

ME&I (MEALS EXPENSE and INCIDENTALS) includes obviously meals and few other items. Incidentals were really defined back in the day prior to our ability to easily communicate.

I just ran 2 scenarios where used a 30CPM rate and a driver who was out 294 days per year. In one scenario I used a single driver with no company paid per diem to a single driver who receives his pay at 20CPM driving and 10CPM per diem (untaxed).

I did the same calculation for a married driver filing a joint return. Obviously, every taxpayer's situation would vary somewhat and this is by no means intended to say that per diem is always better.

In both of these cases, the taxpayer was better off cashflowwise to take the per diem.

Now several folks here have noted some of the downfalls to taking per diem...reduced social security income reporting, lower income levels for worker's comp and other disability payments, if applicable, more difficulty qualifying for loan programs due to lower Box 1 income on your W-2s, etc.

I am not sure that there is a surefire method of making this call. in a lot of cases the driver has no say in the matter...per diem is required.

If that is the case, you are probably not going to be any worse off as determined by cash flow going home, however, there are definitely some downsides.

Gotta love CPA's! lol It's good to get an educated "go" for the per diem program. Y'all should consider doing trucker taxes for a side gig at the end of the year.

I looked back in my right mirror and saw the right side door swinging. I have no idea how that door got unhooked or was able to swing out...there was a walkway with a railing right beside the dock and thought the door had caught the railing and ripped it off its hinge.

I've had tight docks with obstacles like that push the door a bit more tightly against the trailer... Same thing with some of the weather skirting some docks have. Both have bounced the trailer door's chain out of it's catch once or twice. result is a door that's loose once ya begin pulling out.

Sounds like this may've been what you encountered.

I am getting a real education out here. I don't know how these guys (and gals) do it unless they are retired and this is a second "career". I can see it as "fun" (seriously) if you don't absolutely need the money.

It's all in how you look at it. If you make 33cpm and run 600 miles in an 11 hour shift, that equals $198. Take ten and you've still got 2.5 hours (minus the times required for a pretrip.) That's another $49 for a daily total of $247 or a little bit over $18 an hour.

The 600mile figure is around a 55mph average.. Which is a little slow if you're not in a "ninny" state. Granted we'll probably never see an equivalent of $50 per hour, but when you factor in cost of living... The disposable income level can be pretty nice... Or pretty rotten.
