I live in New York State. The last two towns I've lived in, which border each other, don't have their own local police departments. So any type of call, emergency or not, a state trooper responds. We have a local 'barracks' which services the whole area. State troopers patrol my town's roads, but very rarely actually see them.
Tug Toy Thanks this. -
In NY and other places up North they answer calls for service. Down here it’s just traffic and security for special events.Hatt91 Thanks this.

Each has there own zone so you could pass through a city and encounter 3 different sets of police radar traps, the city cops cover the city limits, the sheriff covers outside the city limits into the county, and the state troopers cover the rest of the state. Each one is just a little further away from their main base.

Years ago, after a couple counties started targeting truckers for DOT issues and the NJ legiscriters did, most likely for the last time, decide to limit trucks to the State Police making rules for the Sate Police, and only the State Police, receive 100% of any MCSAP funding coming into the state.
There hasn't been a law faborable to truckers since...... -

It seems like every city with a port or intermodal hub has jumped on the CMV cash cow. Some are obviously there strictly for revenue generation (Elwood, can you hear me there in the back?) while others came about to help police the swarms of rolling scrap heaps that the states didn't spend enough time harassing. Not sure if they were the first, but Houston was where i first remember seeing city DOT cops. Late 80's, IIRC.

No a full grown is the state police/state troopers. Full grown meant they were able to enforce all cmv laws. County or local can't enforce all cmv laws so they'd have to call in the state dot certified troopers. Some county and local jurisdictions do have some of their officers dot certified. In my state dot can't carry weapons or write speeding tickets. They also can't pull over civilians in automobiles.

I thought DOT was either a Diesel Cop or a Diesel Bear
