Hi, I am thinking about getting my CDL license, I am leaning to a Truck Driving School. I have been browsing this forum for a couple of days and found a lot of information. My situation is somehow different from most of the other "newbies". I really need a job fast and need to make living. I am a heart transplant recipient. Previously I worked mostly in retail setting, not making much money but surviving because my wife had a decent job. She lost it recently. After my heart transplant I went back to school and go my BA in accounting. I did not have any experience and jobs are scarce, because I have the option to get the driving school paid by vocational rehab I thought that at least I can get a job. I have a family, but I am a loner otherwise, so I am thinking that the nature of the job would not be so bad. My only concern is if I can support my family as a new driver. Please give me some opinions and maybe recommendations if I am making the right choice.
My new carrer?

Welcome Ivad...
My Father in Law is also a heart transplant recipient. He got his about 14-15 years ago.
Have you considered the medical problems that could occur while you are on the road?
To be honest, after what I have seen my F-I-L go through, I sure wouldnt venture far away from your heart Dr's.
As recent as 2 weeks ago he was taken to the local hospital. They said that they thought he was rejecting his heart. The following evening they transferred him to Dallas where he had the transplant and his Dr's are. After a 5 minute exam they said that he wasnt having any problems with his heart. Long story short they are trying to get 2 blood clots to dissolve. He was in the Dallas hospital over a week.
After seeing how a large, well respected hospital can misdiagnose a blood clot for him rejecting his heart, I would hate to see what the hospital in a small town would have to say.
Just think this over carefully.
I am not yet a student but I am researching the trucking industry before I start school. From my understanding, be prepared to make $30,000 to maybe $35,000 your first year, if your lucky...
Is it worth it?
Best of luck with whatever you decide...kickin chicken and Baack Thank this. -
Thanks for your replies, I am thinking very hard about this and because I have been trying to find a work for so long I think that I may actually have a chance to get a job a pay my bills, but I am certainly not sure about it, I guess I am desperate. If I something doesn't happen very fast I don't know if I could continue. Since June I only had two replies to all the jobs I applied to and never heard of them again. Most of my life I worked in retail and don't really have any experience in accounting, other then being "an office boy" for three years. If I can make living with trucking it would be great. Can I handle it? I don't know. Do I have any other choice, probably not.

I feel ya man, I had transplant 10 yrs ago and been going to school also. I've been trying to get training and job since Dec 09'. All of the private schools wouldn't touch me unless I signed a placement waiver, and the companies that contract training are just as hard. The first thing you need is a release without any limitations from your transplant Doc. Most will deny you because of lack of recent job experience and won't count school. Now some will count school. I have 2 companies I'm working with and have gotten everything done but now its in medical and on hold. My Voc Rehab has no funding so I have been going the contract route alone. I am now working on WIA to pay for training, but they will only pay if I get a pre-hire. My hope from this angle is that if I can sucessfully complete training well, maybe the companies will not be as difficult as them having to invest in my training. I have my med card for 1 yr and my permit and still no soap(yet). They will hire someone with bypass and a higher risk of sudden death than we have.Don't let anyone discourage you because you know how you feel and where your at. There is a blood test for rejection now so they don't have to muck around in there and take chunks of your heart. If your Doc feels you don't need to be close then do it. Good luck!
By the way I found a guy in KS who went back to driving so it is not disqualifying just discriminating.
