I have just failed my skills test on alley doc
backing. I just can not figure this manuever
out. I have attemped this about 20 times
but still cannot control the trailer between the white lines. I only get two more chances
before I have to buy a new permit. I need
more practice but my school has so many students, they don't have much time for me.
If any of you live in Northern California, and
have a tractor & van trailer for me to practice with, I will trade you some drive time
for the lessons. I don't have any trouble driving, parallel parking or backing-up but this
alley doc has my pea brain baffeled.

Go buy a toy semi and play with it! Really I am not cracking on you. Do your set up on the table and watch from above. Now picture you in the truck. This will give you an idea of what you are doing wrong. Try not to make shifting sounds when pulling around! Now I am cracking on you! Sorry, :toothy10:

You have only had 20 chances to practice before your test? Can you say ripped off? My school must have had me run the alley dock practice about 60 or 70 times. Give your school an ultimatum of either getting you enough practice or refunding your money in full. I am sure you will get results.

that toy 'advice" really does work. it shows you how the wheels need to be placed for any backing manuever.

As long as the model is to scale, than it does help. On that note, I would also suggest laying down a large sheet of paper and drawing lines on it to represent a road or a dock. You would just have to keep them sort of proportionate to the size of the model truck.

that sucks, all we had to do in NY was parallel park and straight line back.

You get your docking practice by actual realworld situations, as no set up with lines can prepare you for an actual dock.

Keep trying, at some point it will just "click" and you will be fine.

I didn't want to be the first one to ask LOL. I get a picture in my mind of an extended distance to back up with obstacles on either side. Like you have a dock 200 feet down at the end of an 11 foot wide alley. If so, I really think it's unfair to a student driver to make this a requirement for a license.
