That’s the type of scene where I pick up the phone and tell somebody I won’t be in today.

I chained a lot in CA when I was hauling cattle, it’s not really any different than WA or OR. Sure you end up running chains on wet pavement, but if you get them good and tight and drive slow they will last. The issue is when guys run loose chains because they don’t take the time to stop and tighten them after they start driving. The cross links raise up off the tire and then slap the pavement when they come around the front edge. That’s what damages chains on wet pavement.

Edit: I had the same chains on my truck when I sold it in 2016 as I had when I started running cattle out west in 2012. If you buy good chains to start with and maintain them they will last. Now I’m lazy and carry socks under my bed in case I get inspected, but I also prefer to avoid winter now that I’m older.

When I was young an old timer told me to keep the chains greased up and that will keep the rust off!!!

Chains are a way of life in the PNW. Use them or lose your job. It’s that simple. Quit being so soft and admit you’re scared. With good tight chains you’ll be just fine.

No one likes throwing chains.. but to tell you the truth, I always felt safer with the chains on when the roads were absolutely garbage.

I have no problem with people who don’t want to chain. We’re all different people, and if you’re not comfortable then you should park. My only gripe is when the non-chainers decide they’re going to park and clog up the chain up areas while they wait for the storm to pass.

Chains will keep your traction, but there is only one person I trust with my personal space and safety, and I look at him in the mirror daily...
