I recently bought a frightliner with a cat 3406e motor with 872000 miles on it for resale or use in Africa what work needs to be done on it If I decide to use it my self
also I payed $5750 for it was this a bargain or not -
overhaul...............yes.
Liner protrusions need to be triple checked and probably be brought up to the high side of specs. Also while in there use the heavy haul ring set instead of the standard rings that come with the liner kits, I can't remember the part # but they do exsist. -
This has got to be a first....but one up on Kurt with a part number.....unbelievable.

Stock top ring 237-0194
Heavy Haul top ring 247-6130 -
Gotta give you an "attaboy" sulltran. Rarely does anyone get ahead of Kurt....
What is the difference between standard and heavyhaul ring? -
Black Dog,
Yes....I know.....one fleeting moment of glory. I'll climb back into my hole now.
-
Black Dog,
I believe the heavy haul ring is a a harder material to withstand higher temps, pressures, etc. -
This is is the heavy haul ring.....
An improved top piston ring has been released for engines that are used in high load applications. The improved top piston ring is made from stronger materials. The stronger materials have a proven robustness in order to withstand fatigue due to high load applications. For only the high load applications that are listed below, replace the 237-0194 Top Piston Ring with the 247-6130 Top Piston Ring on the piston prior to assembly in order to provide increased life. High load applications include coal and logging applications. High load applications also include any application with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) that is equal to or greater than 63500 kg (140000 lb).
You may not have a ring problem, make sure its not your turbo passing boost underload in to the crankcase. Tank an oil sample to check for possible headgasket. -
Why wouldnt this "heavyhaul" ring be used in all engines?
-
this top ring cat says not available for my 3406E motor is this true? 2000 3406E 2ws24418 500 hp. im getting ready to put it back together with a pdi 625hp ecm program and turbo and exhaust manifold.
