I went to Sturgis in 2009. Took 6 hours to get into a restaurant. So, I went riding through the Badlands, saw Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Little Big Horn and the Devil’s Triangle. Ended up in Jackson Hole for several days and at a casino in Reno.
Sturgis is way too crowded and small for those massive crowds. Well, for me it’s too crowded.
Devil’s Triangle is cool to see…looks like a gigantic petrified tree stump growing way out in the middle of a place with no big trees or mountains.sawmill, CAXPT, jamespmack and 11 others Thank this. -
Ain’t no snow here. Slimy on top.CAXPT, jamespmack, tramm01 and 5 others Thank this.

I'm not big on crowds either. I'm not really banking on sticking around the rally too long, just walk around for an hour or 2 and then head out to see the sights you mentioned. Mt Rushmore would be pretty neat to see. I'd like to cut through Yellowstone on the way back home as well.CAXPT, jamespmack, cke and 10 others Thank this.

Sturgis is like Mardi Gras.
Ya got to go and experience it once.CAXPT, jamespmack, cke and 10 others Thank this. -
Been several times over the last 30+ years. Downtown is an absolute fluster cuck, way too many people in a small area for me now. Back in my 20s I enjoyed the partying and sights... not so much now.
Six gave a couple good places to visit. If you want to go just to party go during the rally, be prepared to spend a lot more for motels if you can get a room. Camping is pretty reasonable if you're tent camping.
If you want to go ride and see the country, go the week before or after. Vendors will be set up a few days before and after to buy souvenirs.
Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse ( take the time to watch the short movie), Spearfish canyon, Needles hwy, Custer state park are all good spots. The buffalo in Custer are semi domesticated, so less chance of being a road pancake on a bike unlike the ones in Yellowstone.
If you decide to go, be aware that the cops have no sense of humor after the first day from dealing with the idiots. -
I didn't realize the vendors set up early. Week before might be better, actually get to see and do stuff around town. Hopefully the bike is up for the 35 hour round trip lol.dwells40, CAXPT, jamespmack and 7 others Thank this.

That would be a good idea.
If you want a road trip back home from Sturgis going through Yellowstone you should include Chief Joseph Highway and Beartooth Pass and then Going to the Sun road in Glacier. Some incredible riding and scenery.CAXPT, jamespmack, cke and 8 others Thank this. -
Thanks for the suggestion. I've only been to the US once on a day trip and I really want to see more. I recently read a series of books on the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone and I really want to check out some of the places that were mentioned in the books.dwells40, CAXPT, jamespmack and 8 others Thank this.
