Hey Brian,
I've used 7700 for 4 months now-I love it. I read a while back about some having trouble with updates. I called to have a data card sent but apparently they won't have those for some time. Instead, I've been sent an update on cd but am afraid to use it if it may lock up my gps. Were those isolated instances, or should I be ok to download via laptop? I'm running Windows Vista, or have another with Windows 7. Thanks for your help. -
1. Temporarily disable hibernation and screen saver. Simply go to the screen saver, turn off the screen saver, and then click on power settings and disable any power saving features. You can restore the settings after the update is complete.
2. Move the mouse cursor around the screen every few minutes. The computer will recognize this as "user input" and will not go to sleep.
Also, be sure to follow the step-by-step instructions that come with the DVD.
Just so you know, we do have the SD cards available now. To order one, please call Customer Service at 773-889-3087.
The SD card is faster, easier, and virtually foolproof. There is a $12 charge, but if you send it back within 30 days you can get a full refund.

I purchased the 7700 several months ago. I drive primarily across Western Canada. After I bought the unit I got the upgrade to 1.5.1.12. However I find the routing and directions at times to be quite inaccurate. There seems to be a real problem with the unit when specifying "shortest distance" or "shortest time". For example I can put in a route from Vancouver to Winnipeg, use route option "shortest distance" and it'll come up with 2342 kilometers and estimate 28 hours. Put in the route option "shortest time" and the mileage will come up as 2860 and the estimated time as 37 hours. Using the shortest time option it insists on sending me down all sorts of secondary roads which I know are totally wrong.
The database for avoiding non truck routes is also very inaccurate in a number of Canadian cities.
In addition the unit insists on warning me of every side road along the route and displaying load limits even though thes roads aren't being used on my route. The constant warning is very irritating.
I certainly hope that a more accurate update for Canada is in the works soon, because at this point I have very little faith in the unit. I don't know how well the 7700 works in the United States, but I am very disappointed with its performance in CanadaLast edited: Mar 26, 2010

Regarding your comment about the database being inaccurate for avoiding non truck routes, please provide a couple specific examples so that we can check.
I will try to check on the unnecessary warnings you described.

I installed the map update without a hitch. However today the software reverted back to California length limits of 38'. I realize that there is an update to that (Version 1.5.1.2). My current ver is 1.5.1.12. Should I still install the update even if it is an older S/W version? Thanks

I use the cobra Pro.... Very good, so far very accurate, good routing... I also have Copilot on My laptop, they prett much do the same trick, as far as route accuracy goes, although copilot wants to put you more on little roads through towns, the cobra is pretty straight forwards highways, drivable routes....
